Thai boy killed, Myanmar boy injured by border landmine

By The Nation

A Thai boy was fatally injured and his Myanmar friend was severely injured when they stepped on a landmine while picking wild mushrooms on the Myanmar side of the border across from Tak’s Prop Phra district on Saturday morning.

Police were informed that Pollawat Chomsaeng, 7, and nine friends had crossed the border from their Moo 4 village in Tambon Valley to pick wild mushrooms.

The sound of the blast when Pollawat and Maung Aye, 10, stepped on a landmine brought villagers to search for them and rush them to Prop Phra district hospital. Pollawat died on his way to the hospital and the Myanmar boy was admitted to the intensive care unit.

The area has a lot of wild mushrooms and the kids had already visited the site on Thursday.

That is utterly tragic. Dying at such a young age, just for going out to get something tasty to eat.

Indiscriminately placed Land Mines across the planet are a disgrace, especially when such innocent victims get caught in the detonation.

RIP to the boy and I hope his young friend makes a full recovery.
