Now the going rate is 10,000 - 20,000 THB over the counter without any receipt for white foreigners. So this is just to increase to 30,000 - 50,000 THB. The reality: This makes a lot of sense, because cmon, face it, the pain for such a thing has a higher price tag than 10k.

And to the big mouths saying Thais pay a lot less: A lot of Thais going to a holding cell for some days to face the court and in the western societies these holding cells are a violation of human rights. So, if you are keen, just drink and drive, don't pay the otc rate and they will surely take you to one of these.

Sounds like an easy way for police to increase their bribes to 50,000 baht. That is, if it were a corrupt country, and not an honorable and honest nation like Thailand.

You are absolutely correct. From first hand experience, the current going rate is about 15k. If this talk reaches the finest of the bunch in Pattaya, BKK and Phuket, there will be surely a lot more topics like "got busted for drunk driving and could not pay 50k and now being hold in a cell (but they did not take my mobile phone)" at TV.

The truth about this, as we all know, is that certain people will never be asked to blow into that little machine. Only some will be caught and fined, the off-duty uniforms, the sons of wealthy parents and those parents themselves will just be waved on. These things die hard.

yes unfortunately, the one who will be in the position of having to pay will be the ones least able to afford pay - while the others will just continue on merrily as if nothing has change (hasn't for them)

Courts can raise the fines in the case of repeat offences but the police want the power to issue far greater penalties to those who flout the law, even the first time.

There is something rotten here!

Make it a gazillion dollars - who gives a shit. It won't be enforced.

Remember the police captain a few years back who got asked to do a breathalyser test: he refused... the cop requesting the test was reprimanded, and the head of the police sent a memo that all cops memorise the number plates of senior officers so as not to pull them over. Nobody gave a shit that the "law" was refusing a breathalyser test is an admission of guilt.

You do not understand how law is applied there.

A good Thai salary is 200k in a whole year so how he thinks they can fine the locals this much is a mystery.  Of course it will never happen , just another brainless idea. Prison is a good idea, but there's not enough room inside for 10 million drunk idiots.

Another method of raising black money for the RTP.....

Most average Thais simply cannot afford such high fines, no matter the reason for such fines.

But an under the table payment, less than the high fine cost, for forgetting an offence, would appeal to many.
