We live in Northern Japan but might move back to Okinawa next month. I love riding in Okinawa so I definitely need to get a road bike.

I had bad experiences with them too. The problems with all the bike shops is only the owner cares, the staff don't give a @#$%, and generally can't do their job. So unless you can walk in a

Suspiciously beginning to sound like a penis size contest.  Enough drivel for me.  I'm gone and glad.

Bwahahaha.... 5 pages into the topic a curve ball about penis size joins the discussion after we agreed that we were actually agreeing!

Any bike that would make you sad if it got irreparably broke or stolen is a "high-end" bike in my book.  My Cannondale is such a bike.  It really has little to do with cost or what it's made of.  But yeah, top line components ain't cheap.

I wouldn't concentrate on the frame too much, reckon the groupset is more important. For me high end road would Shimano 105 upwards, and XT upwards for MTB. So far I managed with "lower end" components, but last year with 10000+ km I went to the shop twice to replace some bits. Further cannot get the gears indexed properly, I need "double actuations" way too much.
