A Strange Problem With Wireless Access

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a D-Link DI-524 wireless router connected to my modem.

Yesterday I found that I could not post or reply to the Forum, using Firefox 2.

I tried clearing the cache and even reloading the s/w but to no avail.

Using Opera I could post, but it was not reliable.

The Thaivisa speed test works for download, but not upload.......

All very odd.

Now I have been wracking my brains to think what changes I have made and undoing them one

by one.

Eventually I plugged the modem cable directly into my notebook and suddenly all is well.

Going back to Wireless and I loose the upload again.

The router is right next to the computer.

Any ideas what is wrong.

Thanks

Astral

Anything that could possibly be causing interference?

quite possible. it took me weeks to find out that my desk lamp (neon bulb) made my nearby plugged in USB-sticks go crazy.

If interference is the problem, try to grounding the Wireless Router. That's easy done by applying a wire from the (ever wett) ground to the shield of the antenna!

Another side effect of grunding the Router: I've grounded my Wireless Router this way and I can use now my Laptop in an range of about 300 m, before max 100 m!

Anyway, many problems accours because of missing grunding of the electric circuit!

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have turned off Blue Tooth which I enabled last week, same band, but problem persists.

I have changed the channel, no effect.

I will look at the earthing, but the problem occurs when the router and computer are only 30cm apart (1ft).

The computer sees full signal strength.

I am not aware of any changes in the area to cause interference.

So still working on the problem.............

Any other ideas?

Did you try upgrading the router's firmware? Many weird problems go away with new firmware... find DLink download pages using Google.

I would recommend to start there.

1) Upgrade router firmware

2) Hold router's reset button for 20 seconds - that way it gets reset to factory defaults

3) Connect router via ethernet cable to your laptop and set it back up (follow instruction maual, can also download that from DLink)

4) Upgrade your own wireless driver (let us know what kind of laptop/wireless card you have)

If it doesn't work after that, it's most likely a hardware issue. I think this will sort things out though...

I have 4 DLink Access points and while they are truly a pain in the behind to set up the hardware works very well. Once you got them up and running.
