Hi TV members, my wife is currently here in the UK on a settlement visa. Does anyone know whether my wife would need any visas if we went on a cruise around the Med or Caribbean? Has anyone done the same? I've contacted several cruise companies but had no replies.

Regards

Does the settlement visa permit travel into Europe (i.e. France / Schengen countries) ?

If not, your wife may require a Schengen Visa, and any visa for the countries which may not be included in the Schengen  agreement.

A cruise involves getting off at various stations so your wife will need at least a Schengen visa for the European leg.  You need to investigate all ports of call before departing so you don't miss something including the Caribbean.

Notwithstanding, your average Thai wife will almost certainly be bored to death on a cruise.

I thought that might be the case. It was actually her that suggested a cruise. Its never really been my sort of holiday. Scotland it is then...

Cruise companies are known for vague and inaccurate answers to passenger questions regarding visas.  Cruise forums are loaded with stories of people unable to disembark at ports of call because they didn't have a proper visa that they were never told they needed.  Most cruise lines do emphasize that's it's the passengers responsibility to get the proper visas.

This is a prime example where paying a good travel agent who knows about such things as visas can be very worthwhile.

Your average anybody under the age of 70 would be bored to death on a cruise....

Never understood the appeal whatsoever myself.

Still, each to their own...

Depends on the country, some require a visa regardless of whether you get off the ship or not.

And another thing, that's why we did not get on a cruise tour in the mediteranian sea , even holding a Shengen Visa: the cruise ships are sailing under different flags, maybe US run cruise ships and on these ships US law is the basic and might lead to beeing unable to get on the cruise ship while not holding an US visa. So we skipped the idea of the cruise tour! No agency could provide us with the necessary information!!!!!!!!!!

You have been completely misinformed.

1 Most american cruise ships are flagged and registered outside the USA.

2 A USA visa is required only for a ship berthing in the USA. Not in the Med.

As for a Thai wife been bored she will likely love the casino. As a Brit. With a Thai gf we love cruises and now on our 20th.

You need the Schengen and U.K. visa even if the ship only docks.

And you dont get off.

Unless its changed since the last time we did it.

My Thai girlfriend and I have been on 5 or 6 cruises. She loves them, by the way.

From the research I’ve done, no cruise line will allow you to board the ship without a visa for every country the boat docks at, whether you get off the ship or not.

No visa, no boarding.
