Motorbike insurance question

Featured Replies

So I bought me Yamaha scooter under me ex gf name cos didn’t have work permit but now I got work permit and would like to insure it and get green book changed to my name. Problem is the ex gf lost contact with. Anyone got any experience with this? Also wot would happen if someone hit me and I had no insurance or tax?

To change the name you need a copy of your ex gf's id card and her signature, without this you can't change the name

But to buy insurance and pay tax you just need the green book, doesn't matter in whos name it is

Thanks for reply jack. If Insured and taxed the bike with her green book does that mean I’m insured or just her?

In most cases it is the bike which is insured. There are a couple of types of insurance:

The first which is the most basic and covers 3rd party.

The second which is more comprehensive and will cover your bike in the event of an accident.

There is also theft insurance for bikes.

Also note: You may not be insured if you are here for more than 3 months and don't have a Thai licence.

Additionally: Technically the bike belongs to your ex GF. There could be complications, should could 'claim' the bike. It would be in your best interests to sort this out ASAP.

The compulsary insurance covers everybody riding the bike, even without a license, but this only covers medical costs and the limit is quite low, see: http://www.rvp.co.th/

Any other type of insurance which you might buy would come from a private company and everything regarding the coverage depends on the terms of this insurance, so you just have to read the terms and conditions of your contract.

The bike is older than 5 years so it also needs a mechanical check before you can pay the tax, for this check you have to go to a place with this sign:

If you show this picture to the next best motorbike taxi they can tell you where you find it.

These shops can usually also handle the compulsary insurance and tax for you for a small extra fee (something like 100-200THB extra).

I don't know how it works exactly when you didn't pay for so long, but the people at the shop can probably tell you what has to be done (or you call the DLT and ask) and will probably offer to do it for some extra fee
