Praise for assistant coach who sacrificed himself for the good of the team

Sanook reported that Navy Seals with the boys in the Tham Luang cave said that the the assistant coach had sacrificed himself for the twelve boys under his charge.

 

Of the entire party only two exhibited health problems of a medium level. One of these was 25 year old Ekaphon Janthawong. The other was a boy who was not named.

 

A Seal representative said that the coach had not taken food or water brought into the cave when the party entered for himself instead making sure that it all went to the boys. This action had weakened him more than the boys.

 

He was also well aware of the situation advising on corrects courses of action. He managed the light resources for the good of the children and advised them to stay still as much as possible to conserve energy.

 

He told the boys not to drink the muddy water and just to take on fluids dripping from the cave walls that would be cleaner.

 

The rep said: "He was scared too but he was aware of the situation. He was there for the children and sacrificed himself for their benefit".

What were his actions, he was teaching these young boys how to grow up and be fine young men, you would rather they sit in front of a tv all day playing stupid games, it's called character building. He read the sign and it stated the cave was open, but like all activities of this nature there are certain risks involved. Long may he be involved with teaching children how to grow into decent adults. It is all too easy to criticize when we are doing nothing and other people are.

This statement could be said about thousands of drinkers at songkran.And thousands of others putting lives at risk .You cannot just point out one action of someone.He knew there was something wrong and he took action to protect them.

Well said. Obviously he didn't expect heavy rains that would flood that cave, but then neither did the authorities who had not blocked access to it. On top of that the signage said closed from July.

We have all done things we regret,maybe some worse than others. The coach would have not taken the kids into the cave had he know it was going to flood. The thing I admire according to the stories,he stood up and took control and put the kids first.But as always in society the blame game will continue. Let them get the kids and the coach out,rectify the problem so it won’t happen again.

Given the nature of the activity, vis a vis the dangers of weather/rainfall, this was the equivalent of setting sail on a boat or taking off in an aeroplane (as skipper or pilot in command), on the cusp of "storm season", without consulting met reports and predictions.

 

Really stupid.

 

It remains to be seen if the "happy end" being celebrated (as if it's all done and dusted) actually takes place.

Adding frequency to a risky endeavor does not diminish its risk. Having 'done this before' just means that he knowingly placed the kids at risk more frequently or was simply ignorant to the risks.

 

That said, it seems he has done remarkably well in looking after these kids and once 'stuck' his actions appear to have almost certainly saved lives.

He also seems to be a devoted coach, something very good in the lives of these children. But with certainty his poor choice placed them in grave danger. 

 

I initially saved comment on these threads out of respect for the families of these kids: I was quite sure we would be facing some tragic news in the days to come - The avoidance of such a potentially tragic loss is a great result for Thailand and the collective help they received.

You have no proof whether he consulted met reports or anything else for that matter, but whether he did or not the sign on the cave clearly stated that at this time of year it was ok to enter, only the next month it was 'Dangerous', don't you think that the authorities should be better informed than a lowly football coach and if they considered any danger to the cave it should have been closed.

The coach did what he thought was the best for the youngsters, but again it's so easy to criticize from the comfort of a barstool.

I cannot believe some of the pathetic comments from the armchair judges in this forum.

 

If you don’t know what the circumstances and background is then shut the flock up or at the very least give this man the benefit of the doubt.

I don't know this region but I have seen often rains begin in June; why not close the cave in  June ?

The Sun isn't exactly the paradigm of reporting accuracy. And "it is understood that..." isn't the same as actual quotes or proof. So, probably best taken with a grain of salt. But, the paper says he led them in as part of an initiation rite.

So clearly the definition of sacrifice is lacking here. Unless this muppet is dead he's just hungry. Alright it's a great thing the kids are all alive  but all this other nonsense is just dribble. Isn't this the bloke that led them in there in the first place?
