Cargo ship hit by huge waves off Trang, 17 containers washed overboard

A large cargo ship was hit by huge waves on Wednesday morning, causing all of its 17 containers to fall into the sea near Trang.

 

The NP Lovegistics 2 sent out an emergency help signal at after the waves caused an electrical short circuit, resulting in the ship becoming adrift west of Koh Lao Liang in Trang’s Kantang district.

 

The Trang marine police sent a patrol ship to intercept the cargo ship after learning of the incident at noon.

 

While the patrol boat was still heading to the ship, it was informed that the power system had been restored but the 17 containers on the ship desk were washed overboard.

 

The marine police then advised the ship captain to bring it to dock at the Trang pier in Tambon Na Klua of Kantang district pending a retrieval operation operation to bring raise the containers from the sea.

 

The Trang Harbour Office said nobody aboard the ship was injured.

Did the enormous wave disappear very fast or was the containers not lashed securely more likely.

I would blame the captain, and not the weather. But that's just me.

They reportedly went DIW, not good, started rocking and rolling and Bob's your uncle.  Not a behemoth container ship by any means either.

I used to do a lot of offshore sailing, and floating containers at sea were always a worry.

They often float just below the surface. Hit one at night, doing 5 or 6 knots perhaps, full sail set, and it would simply rip the bottom out of the yacht and you would go down in seconds. If you were below decks in your bunk, no chance.

 

Certainly around the UK, the Royal Navy sink them.

these containers were secured like those on the cargo trailers you see on the roads. Just stacked on another with a rubber mat between.

Posts have been removed.

Containers are designed to sink as they do fall of container ships with some frequency.

Hopefully these sink quicky as they are a marine hazard.
