Hope he gets allot of trouble

the amount I have to pay for my visa each year

a piss take if he doesn’t get long hard sentence

How much? Mine's about 1900 baht.

Overstay is really a misdemeanour.

Also, you are pretty sure your narrative is right.  Why?... there is very little information about him.

When you have a xenophobic, fascist govt, these things tend to happen. It's nothing to do with anything else.

These conditions have been going on for a long long time. Not really got a lot to do with the present government.

Worse places exist and better places exist.

That's the way it is. No complaining on here and no amount of spouting off on here will make any difference.

This isn't a 'go home if you don't like it rant' it's just a post saying wherever or whatever country you decide to move to accept the fact that things are not going to be the same as your own country.

If you have the funds to purchase a flight then a few hours loitering in IDC then off to duty-free, if no money and no one to assist you, you can deduct 200 baht a day from your 20k fine for time served.

The court almost never fines the full amount,2000 baht is more realistic.

Germany did not win the World Cup , but right now they have the world record for the longest overstay in any country I would imagine.

Here's an idea, declare a blanket amnesty to all overstayers, get to know who they're, fine then accordingly and renew their visa if they are good people and not a  wanted criminals of fujities of some sort, that way Thailand will show that they're reasonable and forgiving and by doing that they may have the chance to clear the books and start fresh...

I think they did that about 3 years ago when the bans were introduced

German national Eugen Karl Mullerschon, 60

A bit more info about this overstayer.

He came to Thailand back in 1998 , he is a diver and started as diving instructor and his own company Calypso Diving School on Koh Tao .   He sold the company I believe a few years ago to another German.   website : https://diving-calypso.de/

Very interesting to see he could run a business here for so long without ever being questioned about his visa , never leaving the kingdom .

He was also active in the German expat forums .

He was actually a respected member of the Thai community , at least back in 2004  .

This picture shows the man (2nd from right)  representing the Thailand Diving  Association of South East Thailand.  Picture is from 2004.

So why didn't he come clean ?   Very strange indeed.

Offering a short amnesty window would probably see a large number of people trying to put themselves into a legal situation once more. I am pretty sure there are many, many more out there with stays like this and probably longer too.

They had an opportunity to get themselves legal a few years ago, before the new rules were implemented .

The new overstay ban rules were announced a few months before they were enforced , that was the time for them to come out the shadows and get a visa .

   Its too late now

I am curious about how long exactly are these people held before they are actually put on a plane and deported??

It varies wildly

If you are lucky and someone to buy your departure ticket immediately can be gone in a day or two

If you have no funds or help etc can be a long process

I don't think they are obliged to let you go to retrieve your money from a bank once you are under arrest

No they haven't. When I first started coming here about 20 years ago, it was easy to get a non immigrant multiple o visa. You just applied to Hull and it was done. No questions were asked on arrival and you got 15 months hassle free (90 day visa runs). Tourist visa were also a doddle and there were various places you could go & you never feared of problems with re-entry.

I often went to Savan Vegas. Fly from BKK then to Mukdhan, picked up there & off to the casino for 3 days. They did all the work, no questions asked and it was painless. All this has stopped now and it's hassle after hassle.

If you were caught overstaying you were deported via IDC but it was just 20k and you could come back with NO ban whatsoever.

I understand that in the early 00's there was a lot of dross here. That was mainly due to the fact the baht was weak and people were able to live here extremely cheaply. Just the steep rise of the baht has got rid of over 50% of those from Europe and especially the UK.

Just look at the forums re Visas, immigration on T Visa. It has hardened appreciably in the last 4/5 years in line with who is currently in charge. Just because I haven't many posts (under this avatar), don't think I haven't been here a long long time.

When?

30+ years ago they were 2 within few years. The first one cleared some 50k illegals. Couple of years after that there were over 100k and after the 2nd many more were queuing up waiting for the 3rd. So the government realized this wasn't the solution and vowed never to have another

He should be jailed for 19 years now, since he doesn’t think it’s that big a deal.

Do you really believe that or are you trolling? Beggars belief that people of your ilk exist.

Until they can come up with a ticket home.

If he has been here 19 years, without any trips home, it is most likely that he had no real relatives or friends in Germany. So unless the German government take responsibility, will he remain detained indefinitely? Possibly for life?

What do you mean by Germany takes responsibility?

He's a German citizen so once the ticket is paid for, he's going back to Germany.

How is that even possible without the help of locals and BIB? When even to buy a pack of gum you need to provide 3 signed copies of your passport including the page with latest entry stamp.

Your kidding right? Pattaya and Bangkok and probably quite a few more places and filled with guys that have never had a visa, never intend leaving and have up until recently had zero chance of getting caught. Or how about Isaan? Who's out looking for overstates up there?

I ask in case he has no one to buy a ticket for him, and in case the German government refuses to provide a ticket.

Ok, fair enough.

But he's been living here for a long time so I seriously doubt he won't be able to come up

with the money for a ticket home.

Really? Are you sure??

Of course I'm sure. Whereas I had unlimited access across the border to Thailand now I have 2 trips a year. After which, I am obliged to buy an additional visa for 5000 baht which is good for 6 months.

I have friends who live in Nong Khai and cross the bridge daily. It now costs them 10,000 baht a year to see their wife and kids everyday.

What is causing the confusion here?

My confusion is your blaming miscreants like this German for a change in immigration policy.

He saved himself a lot of money and hassle in the past 19 years.

Well done, mate.

but now having to return to germany with perhaps no where to live and where he may find it difficult to find work.

perhaps he has family and all his friends are here after almost 20 years without leaving.

either way i'd say he's pretty screwed and should have cleared his overstay before the bans came in, that was his real mistake IMO, he had got away with it long enough could've have paid only 20k and stepped straight back in.
