KHON KEAN, 30tj July 2018, (NNT) - According to the Director of Ubon Ratana Dam, the reservoir’s structure remains intact, dismissing the public’s concerns over the possibility that it could collapse in a similar manner to Xepian-Xe Namnoy dam in Laos.

Dam Director Worawit Raweenipapong made the comment, following the recent collapse of a dam under construction in neighboring Laos, that has created a wave of concern over the integrity of the Kingdom’s dams among members of the public.

The Dam Director reported that the multi-purpose reservoir is currently storing 787 million cubic meters of water, using only 32% of its capacity. He reassured the public that the dam still has room for more in-flow. The dam’s functions include electricity generation, irrigation, flood control, transportation, fisheries, and as a tourist attraction.

Director Worawit said the dam is subjected to a daily structural inspection by experts following international standards in examining the facility's integrity. Furthermore, the dam is equipped with a system that automaticly reports any anomaly to officials as soon as anything is detected.

He said that members of the public can also monitor the structural integrity via the ‘EGAT App’ mobile phone application of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, which is available for both Android and Apple devices.
