Phetchaburi hospital introduces special measures for flood victims

PHETCHABURI, 11 August 2018 (NNT) – King Mongkut Memorial Hospital in Phetchaburi has announced special measures to provide medical care for flood victims. 

King Mongkut Memorial Hospital's Deputy Director-General Sombat Sathonsaowapak confirmed the hospital has been prepared with flood response measures to cope with flooding since the hospital was affected by flooding last year. 

The measures, implemented since the overflow of water from Kaeng Krachan reservoir's spillway, aimed to provide medical services to the general public, ensuring that the hospital will continue to operate at the times of disasters. 

Hospital staff are closely monitoring the water level and make assessments of the situation, with maintenance staff watching out for any flooding in the hospital area, and preparing sandbags and water pumps to protect the hospital's facilities, some of which located in low areas such as the x-ray and surgery inpatient wards. 

The hospital has stored supplies as backups in case of emergency, including oxygen supplies, emergency electricity system and fuel for generators, medical and food supplies, and clean water. 

In case of flooding on the hospital grounds, critical patients and equipment from ICU, surgery, and imaging wards will be transported to a safe building, while outpatients will be referred from the emergency ward, with help from the network outside the hospital. 

Should the situation escalate, all critical inpatients will be transferred to the 200 Years Building, while hospital staff will be visiting the chronic patients' home to deliver medicine since they cannot travel to the hospital. Pregnant women with expected labor will be admitted to the hospital as travels may be obstructed by the flooding. 

The hospital has also prepared post-flooding measures by working with the provincial public health office to deliver necessary medicine to the general public, offering mental health counseling sessions, and preventing post-flooding epidemics.
