Could always try visiting Somalia, Syria, Kuwait, and Syria ? maybe Thailand isn't all that bad

Yeah but they don't give insurance if you want to go there so no stats and also, obviously  no risk to insurance companies.

Endsleigh is still essentially a student insurance company, including travel insurance. For the most part it deals with the student demographic - young, not worldly-wise, the naivete often causing them to over-extend themselves. They are also likely concentrating expenditure on hedonistic pursuits that might bring elevated danger and spending relatively low on accommodation, which brings with it insecure accommodation. The study is irrelevant to a broader adult demographic.

I would actually argue the opposite, its street wise backpackers that are very good at exploiting travel insurance to fund their trip and add to the statistics.

I had a guide book years ago "Asia backpacking on a budget", it had a section in the back "how to fund you trip using travel insurance". The best country to report a lost camera that you never owned, how to miss a flight and get a free room, switch your good luggage for old then claim damage etc etc.

It probably is risky if you ride around on  a hired scooter with no licence, (therefore likely no previous experience either in the UK or Thailand), drink buckets of dodgy vodka on the beach and then sleep it off where you flake out, and leave your luggage in unsecured hostel rooms.

Then get drunk the next night, step on a rusty grate with your flip flops and tear up a few toesies, then fight your mate, then fight a ladyboy who whacks you with a knockoff Jimmy Choo shoe.......

The problem is, most Brits under 30 are thick as shit and have no concept of what is going on around them, to busy with their heads stuck in their phones. Every country in the world has danger spots and unless you are paying attention then before you know it you are up the creek without a paddle.

Regrettably one might be forgiven for thinking this. Many seem to leave whatever brains they have at home.

Forgive me and apologies to all my British friends, but I interpret this to mean that the dodgiest Brits visit Thailand, not that Thailand is the riskiest...

Exactly. Pattaya and the British what a sordid affair that is/was.

The only foreigners I know who drive scooters in Bangkok are British.

Same for Israelis. All the kids with brains after they do military service head for US or likewise. All the degenerates come to Asia to bum about as long as their funds hold out. Never meet polite, middle class isrealis.

But Thailand thanks you for your $upport

Met a guy 25+ years ago in a Manila pension. He was running travelers check fraud - Liverpool I recall. Ian I recall, remember him because he was soo dodgy lol. Saw him six most later on KSR still begging me to do a deal...

So the main risks seem to be damaged luggage, flights cancelled and dysentery medication?

Car and motorcycle accidents, mugged and robbed by LBs, thrown off balconies by disaffected bar girls, oh and being British seems to be a big qualifier.  I guess the Chinese are looking for their mention too!

Not just the British

“Thailand is one of the most problematic destinations for Aussie travellers, with one hospitalisation or death every day,”

Its also one of the most visited countries for Australians, if 200,000 Australians went to Iceland for holidays, Iceland would be the most problematic country.

A report from the Australian foreign service some years ago stated that statistically Aussies are more likely to die in Thailand than in any other overseas destination. I think motorbikes & drowning (surprise surprise) were high on  the list of causes of death (probably with booze/drugs as "contributing factors").

I suppose us expats should remember that many here are in "holiday-mode", and are inexperienced in "Thai-ness"!!??

had some neighbors in cm who checked their brains at the border. they were from the uk. kept drawing sheets around our communal garden to have sex. turns out they were filming pornos.

the very conservative landlord could not wait to get rid of them, unfortunately the signed a lease.

the scumbags kept coming over to other peoples bungalows uninvited. they were fat and ugly btw before you get ideas.

i went to uk before and for brekkie they ate fried eggs, sausage and jam with toast and coffee every day. why dont the work out and eat some papaya salad and noodle soup?

Read the OP, its not the riskiest destination, its the destination the has the most insurance claims, damaged luggage, missed flight, eat to much chilli then go the doctors for an upset stomach, backpackers claiming a lost Iphone to fund the trip etc.

Its the riskiest destination for insurance companies, not tourists.

Exactly. In the last 3 years I have had BA cancel a BKK/LHR flight twice at the last minute. Obviously BA is partly to blame for putting Brits at risk.

In the States some people eat mayo & jam, also peanut butter & jam, gross to many Brits.

Nonetheless I've had lots of American friends. (Americans seem more likely to have a thing with drugs (either illicit or prescription) than booze).

One thing about Brits in Thailand is there are more of 'em here than just about any other farang nationality.

Also, Magaluf (Spain) & Ayia Napa (Cyprus) have had similar (boozing) problems with Brits over the years.

Rubbish! This latest study simply confirms that all recent research [eg; WEF 2017, John Stapleton 2015] clearly shows that the most dangerous destination on the planet to travel to is...... Thailand!

Correct. More Aussie die in Thailand than any country other than Australia.

Statistically, Britain is still the highest risk place for Brits, The chance of dieing there runs around 100%.

If 50,000 Brits come to live permanently in Thailand, until they die of old age, statistics would show that Thailand is a very risky destination. Thats nothing to do with Thailand as a destination, its where they chose to be when they died.

The chance of anyone dieing is 100%, geography doesnt change this statistic.

Yes, but how many expats (I was one once) claim on travel insurance when they have problems?

Here's some official data to refute your contention.  You can do the math...  I'd suggest starting with deaths per visitor.

Dude in my 63 years of life I have never heard or seen a Yank eat mayo and jam. Unless they are on drugs.

Very misleading news report in my opinion. For proper comparison, they should have taken into account how many Brits come Thailand.

Hmmmm, Mogadishu or Baghdad for half term break with the kids?

Or perhaps a nice cycling holiday around the Pakistan/Afghan border?

Anyone any tips please?
