Can you supply an example of terms/conditions that forbid to leave the island?

I rent a car there last year and can not remember the slightest hint on that.

Of course leaving Thailand is forbidden (and practically impossible with a rent car), but being bound to the island?

Sixt rent a car Phuket:

The untouched landscape of Phang Nga Bay is a wonderful sight and with a rent a car you get the perfect panoramic view.

Mine was from National through some "brokers" and that is all I can find in the terms/conditions.

National:

CROSS-BORDER AND BOUNDARY RULES

Please note that cross-border travel is not allowed with National Thailand.

Did you ask personally at the desk?
Or did you ask via telephone? (worst case)

In English and the person really spoke proper English?

I ask in English to people who speak English, tried at least 6 places so far with no luck, maybe the airport is the best place to go(phuket)

Sorry, forgot the mention that I rented at the airport.

I booked through a German website forwarded to some US based "broker" and then got a car from National. Insurance booked ahead (2 million Baht 3rd party). No insurance booked at the National counter.

(I live in Thailand but preferred to book online and pay in Euro with my German CC).

I think I studied the documents at least roughly and can't remember any hint forbidding to leave the island and no such advice from the National staff.

Think renting from the airport will be okay, I will go to the airport and book there.

If the OP has been asking the cheap, improperly insured, non-registered as a business, private hire, mon & pop car rental shops, then I'm not surprised that you can't leave the island. probably a good idea too!

Outside the global franchisees of Avis, Hertz and the like, I would pick Thai Rent-a-Car. They allowed my to rent on Samui but no restrictions on going to the mainland. Their website says they're at HKT and could be cheaper than the rest.

My wording wasn't precise really.

As I added to the post: ordered online for pickup at the airport.
