Army borrows Thaksin slogan to promote Prayuth

BANGKOK — Twelve years after his predecessor expelled Thaksin Shinawatra from Thailand, the current junta leader shares at least one thing with the man he blames for the nation’s ills: a pithy campaign slogan.

 

Sharp-eyed observers Wednesday pointed out that a military agency post promoting the totally-not-campaigning Prayuth Chan-ocha used an identical slogan borrowed from then-prime minister’s 2005 reelection campaign.

Thaksin, his men poke fun at junta leaders

JUNTA LEADERS became the objects of derision yesterday, when former PM Thaksin Shinawatra and his men began posting sarcastic messages about the premier and his No 2 man.

 

In a Twitter message, Thaksin said: “He looked and sounded intimidating and fearful. It’s so different from his soft and sweet manner when he was clinging to my table asking for the Army chief’s seat.”

 

He did not name anyone, but was obviously referring to Deputy PM and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, who served as the Royal Thai Army commander-in-chief from October 2004 to September 2005. Thaksin was serving as premier at that time. 

 

Thaksin also included a link in his tweet, which led readers to a report about General Prawit blaming the former PM for political conflicts and disorder in the country. 

 

Thaksin, who was ousted in a military coup in September 2006, has lived in self-exile since fleeing the country in 2008. The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders sentenced him in absentia to two years in jail for abuse of power. 

 

On Tuesday, Thaksin posted a Facebook message recalling the military coup that overthrew his government. Yesterday was the 12th anniversary of the 2006 military takeover.

 

In his post, Thaksin asked if Thailand had improved since the 2006 coup, noting that the last two coups had ousted two prime ministers who are siblings and the most popular government leaders in Thai history. 

 

Meanwhile, both Thaksin’s son and a loyal party member poked fun at Prayut’s publicity campaign yesterday, saying it imitated the one used by the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai Party in the run-up to the 2005 general election. 

 

An online poster issued by the Army Cyber Centre features the slogan “Four Years of Repair and Four More Years of Building”, with an image of a striding General Prayut. This is part of the government’s “Reform Together” campaign.

 

In 2005, Thaksin’s party used the exact same slogan in its election campaigning. The party won by a landslide, giving Thaksin another term as prime minister. 

 

But he was ousted by the military just a little over a year later, in a coup led by Prawit’s successor, General Sonthi Boonyaratglin.

 

Watana Muangsook, a key politician in the pro-Thaksin Pheu Thai Party, tweeted yesterday: “That’s the same slogan Thai Rak Thai used in the 2005 election.

 

“If you want to copy, it’s better you try copying how Thaksin’s brains work, so the country will not be so disastrous.”

 

Thaksin’s son Panthongtae tweeted: “Dad, did you just buy the army webpage?” followed by two laughing emoticons. Panthongtae also ran the two campaign posters side by side for readers to compare.

The government has tried to bolster the grand usurper's image for a while.  There was a sign at the Thai border that had words like "strong" "honest" and something else under his image.  It was in English and Thai.  A good puppet he may be, but he is just not a good example for Thailand

So this is how Pinocchio is telling the people about his intentions to run in the election. After this election the army should be confined to barracks and only allowed out in the case of war, they have no place in politics

Take that up with those behind the convictions subsequently both facilitating their departures and making no efforts to have them extradited. They belong in jail right with them.

And the grand usurper, illustrious general Prayuth whose authority comes from guns and no conversation ?  All them treat Thailand with the dignity of a sandbox.   None of them play nice, although the Shinawatras were fairly elected.  

 

Most of the world looks upon these "fugitives" as part of a political game and ignore calls for their arrest and extradition .  A game that all corridors of power are guilty of playing.

 

The humble Thai deserves a vote, and should be able to vote for whom they choose.

How incredibly lazy/stupid does one have to be to copy the political enemy's campaign slogan..., or is the Army Cyber Centre trying to not so subtly undermine Prayut?

Well, whatever the case maybe, it's probably a much more fundamentally inherent flaw, such as: 12 + 8 = 4

If you want to confine the Thai Army to the barracks, well... good luck with that. To me, and after knowing this country for more than 30 years, it sounds like saying that the Chinese Communist Party should stay away from the Chinese government.

 

The present administration has been doing a consistent job for the past 2 years in preparing for an election. An election, not a 'return to democracy' (there never was any true democracy in this country anyway).

 

An election must and will be held, mostly because the surprisingly naive (or cynical) Western politicians, and self-appointed democracy-keepers demand it, as if elections automatically warranted democracy. You'd think Westerners would know better by now, but hey, you can't fix naive (or cynical).

 

So, thanks to all the good work done, a soon-to-come general election will effectively be turned into a general's election.

 

Which would not be a problem IF a General was in a position to 'return democracy' to a country he leads - elected or not.

 

Is he ? The simple and obvious answer is no, because all the basic principles of democracy are systematically  removed from the DNA of Army people. Armies are functional because they are undemocratic. When decisions have to be made on the battlefield, imagine what it would be like if the soldiers had to vote on the issue first.

 

So, expecting a General (no matter how good or bad a person he may be) to install democracy in a country he runs is very much like asking a tiger to implement and lead the Vegetarian Worldwide League.
