Too, there is your definition of mind expanding and mine.  I'm sure they are different. 

 

It is extremely difficult to rescue people in triple canopy jungle.  A friend of mine did this every day for 2 years.

I was at his funeral in Pattaya (he got killed in a bus accident) also at his funeral was a hypnotherapist who helped people stop smoking and conducted funerals both interesting people and FF (can't post name) the only guy I know to make a long term relationship with a drop dead gorgeous go go dancer work.  They have beautiful children and she is one of the most devoted wives I've ever met (he has had a number of health emergencies).  Groups that I belong to in Thailand and America are simple more stimulating in Thailand.  The people are far more interesting.  They have more fun and do more exciting things.

You and me the same. As a non-drinker, parties are not as much fun... and I was often accused of being boring. The reality is that drunks are the boring ones, but they are too drunk to realise it.

I left the UK for the first time in my life at the age of 22 to work in Africa, and later Australia. Returned to UK to settle down and have a family, working in mining camps and oil rigs in empty quarters of the world is pretty lonely stuff.

 

Good at first, but marriages go stale. At 57, after redundancy and a now loveless marriage, prospect was spend the next 20 years on the south coast hoping the kids will visit me in my retirement flat, or,

Now have a new family, younger wife and daughter and probably got more sex in the last 10 years than the previous 30 years! Also have fishing pond and a small fish rearing facility (always wanted a fish farm). Still a few other ambitions left (catch some bigger fish, maybe a mia noi or 2, create the perfect fishing pond). May not all happen, but definitely an improvement on the alternative.

 

Yes, you have to dig yourself out of the rut you are in, but age is no impediment - in fact a pension liberates you from the NEED to work - now i do when i want to, and laze about if i don't.

 

Ha! retirees have no ambitions? lot to learn, boy.

Personally I think Thailand offers an awful lot for those adventure junkies, whatever it may be that floats your boat. I firmly believe that expatriate life is more interesting, and keeps you young, at heart, at least. For me, the reduced stress and feeling more relaxed is a bonus and a veritable tonic. In UK I would get wound up if a property was vacant, now I don't give a toss, as I made sure the income was sufficient to survive on at 50% occupancy. I'm now retired in my piece of paradise with barely a care in the world, (once we're finished building the dream home!). Fortunately I'm one of those who realises when enough is enough, and that living life is more important than filling the coffers.

 

I left the comfort of family and home environment at age 18, from England to Scotland, not earth shattering international travel, but a big step for an 18 year old - new job, new home / environment, new friends etc. Then overseas, for the first time, at age 23 to the Seychelles. I have never looked back, and as my old step dad used to say, "you've nothing to come back for lad"!

 

I have lived in about 40 different properties in 7 different countries to date, every time it's an upheaval, stress and a learning curve, but I wouldn't have had it any other way, as the alternative was unthinkable.

 

As for leaving friends behind, as has been commented on previously, I quickly learned that as soon as you're gone they move on. Returning from the Seychelles I looked up my old pals on the regular lads night out,  and was bored to tears, they spent the whole evening discussing plumbing in washing machines. Not that I wanted to regale them with stories of my travels all night, but I did not get a simple "did you enjoy your spell there"? Perhaps a bit of green eyed monster!

 

Life is a tapestry, and I didn't want mine to be monochromatic.

 

Like another poster, I plan to write a book, not for publishing or profit, simply to keep the brain active and for my own personal enjoyment of recalling past experiences, and trying to keep Alzheimer's at bay.....

I guess it depends on the expat.  The Thai bashers and haters certainly have no youthful or adventurous mindset. The TV screen sports crowd  slavishly following 'footie' are not exactly adventurous as they just replicate a mundane western existence.  They could be anywhere. But the guys who get out, do some bar hopping, bar fine girls, travel around Thailand and engage with life here then I think they have a lot more fun and stay more youthful.

Many of us find the overall quality of life to be much higher in Thailand. Of course assuming you have a decent income, or savings. We live well here. For me, I find most Thai people to be delightful and lighthearted. Pleasant to be around. In the US, unless you are fortunate to be living in an area like Breckenridge, or Aspen, or Northern New Mexico, or Sonoma County, or a few other equally sublime areas, the life is not very good, in my humble opinion. Alot of angst, disappointment, division, racism, and bad mojo these days in the US. A nation on the downswing. America is definitely not becoming great again. 

 

Also, I am married to a younger woman than myself. I highly recommend that. She keeps me young. My heart goes out to the guys who are married to women their own age. For some it works. For me, it does not, on so many levels.
