Is that factual enough for you because I say so and you cannot prove otherwise? Or would you like to see the proof? Westerners can get a mortgage for a house? For Land? Since when? Haha... are you sure they went to the moon? where is the proof of that? You see... this request of proof can get just a bit silly - at some point you have to accept things... I personally have never seen first hand proof that the world is a globe... I've never been high enough to see the curvature of the Earth with my own eyes, yet I don't believe the earth is flat... I take it on faith that those before me are being honest. Regarding web forums, while there are often posts of questionable credibility on ThaiVisa.com there are also scores of posts who's posters make credible claims which if we were to disbelieve any of these claims or statements without absolute (independent?) proof discussions would stall and go no where - much like this one. There is a degree of reality with some statements... If an expat on this forum states he has a mortgage what is so hard to believe about that? You forget that Westerners can own Condo's..... Westerners can also 'guarantor' a Wife's mortgage for their house (which is in her name of course). Thus, the ease with which you disbelieve a fairly believable statement and use 'your moon comment' to justify such disbelief only serves to make a very poor and ill thought out point
October 6, 20187 yr I enjoyed my lunches in Thailand, though Taiwan was better. But I don't think anyone takes a job anywhere based on the lunch options available.

Upload a job description and let Paysa Talent do the rest. The benefits section on the actual school site is unavailable https://www.patana.ac.th/recruitment_benefit.asp According to Paysa (and who knows where they get their facts?) 17% of the employees are white. Not to many openings for white people it appears The salary you quote is at the absolute highest end. What percentage of the 17% white employees are absolutely at the max end? Probably not many if any. This was posted in another post: Salary ranges can be anywhere between 50k-250k, but typically would say around 70-80k baht is average overall. 90-120k for Masters. Many schools have different rates for "local hires" and those that got the job abroad That would probably confirm my statement, unless you have a masters degree, which a high percentage of teachers do not, then not many reach the upper echelons of the pay scale The top schools qualifications as posted: 4 to 10 years international teaching experience Bachelors or Masters Degree in Teaching from US, UK So these folks making the money are professional college degree teachers, not your average TOEFL teachers that flood this forum The Salary I quoted was one of the only sources of documented proof of teachers salaries at a Top Tier International School in Bangkok. Something which a qualified and experienced teacher in the UK would consider. The salaries are higher than I was led to believe (see below). I have never disagreed with you about TOEFL teachers... they don't have comparable positions anywhere else... Neither do they have much of a future here - as you pointed out in your opening post. The objection is against your misunderstanding that it is these TOEFL's or equivalent low earners who represent the whole of the foreign demographic in Thailand and when faced with comments to the contrary you dispel them requesting 'facts and evidence'. I have used the point that a Qualified and Experienced Teacher in the UK could be attracted to and have a future in Thailand and that Salaries for such a qualified person are comparable. You have avoided this point and continue that this is just the Top End... Yes, it is the Top end, but there are a lot of high end well paying International Schools in Bangkok which pay equivalent to UK teachers salaries for their teachers.... One A Level Maths teacher has already pointed out that a decade ago his salary in the UK was £18xxx (his second job). There are many positions in Thailand which compete for Westerners and pay competitively and offer competitive futures. There are also scores of 'futureless' positions or whatever you'd wish to call them which are at best temporary fillers but for some present an employment opportunity for years, as you pointed out, without future. The underlying disagreement in this thread is with your assertion that the positions in Thailand cannot compete with positions in the the West (our home countries) and the comparison you rely upon to prove your point includes a football coach earning US$7.6 million or someone equally unrealistic. When you have provided information which is more competitive you have done so providing information that the salaries of the Top Schools Teacher Salaries in the US are not too dissimilar to the Tops Schools in Thailand, on this point I would like to draw your attention to your quoted Salary of US$90,000 at Spence School New York - which, in reference to the above graph falls just above the 75th percentile of Salaries at Bangkok Patana, one of Bangkok's Top schools. It is this last statement where I point out you have backed up my point rather than argued against it. Salaries and a future here in Thailand are not such that they fail to prevent a position here from being 'all that'... in many cases they are in fact competitive. Of corse, the TOEFL's and those filling lower positions are here in their numbers, but they are not the sole contributors to the Expat / Westerner demographic and the 1:1000 ratio remains extremely questionable if not completely flawed, such that I would like to quote you and ask 'Provide Proof / facts' [of your 1:1000 ratio of expats in well paid positions with a wholesome future vs futureless positions]
October 7, 20187 yr When I was back in the Old Country a few years back, I had cause to stay in a hotel in Northern city, and the front-line staff seemed to be predominantly reasonably well-educated foreigners, who I am sure could get a better career in their own country than waitressing. Is Aberdeen all that when you have to work every day? SC

October 7, 20187 yr Most kids at Oxbridge come from 'connected' families (MPs, aristocracy, military, the law). The general British public doesn't get to go all that much apart from a few token choices. That is no longer the case; it was when we were applying, but not today. There are still many students in the back door marked Royals & Posh, but for the most part OxBridge is genuinely merit based, as are the Ivies.Sent from my iPad using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app
October 7, 20187 yr Au contraire... Wealthy Thai's commonly educate their children at the International Schools in Thailand too... NIST, ISB, Shrewsbury, Patana, Harrow, BKK Prep - they will then send them oversea's for their University Education which is most definitely not up to 'international Par'. I do tend to agree with your comment that Thailand is not a place for a 40 year old office clerk or a Teacher in a Thai School or any other position in which the career prospects are relatively limited.... However, Thailand is an excellent place for a 40 year old International School teacher (male or female, with or without family) or a number of other positions where their income and continued prospects can be measured on an international standard. I think we disagree about where wealthy Thais go to school. There are many Thai kids in US and UK boarding schools, and a ton in Switzerland. I would love to see University placement results for top international schools in BKK.Re teaching in Thailand, I would include a senior teacher/administrator with a Master’s or PhD and experience at International Schools as someone who has figured out how to make money no matter where they are! It’s a good gig and huge demand. And actually, looking at that salary chart, I think anyone can live in BKK on 70-90K baht per month, so maybe no need for the masters.Sent from my iPad using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app

You make a good point. And what has been ignored thoughout the ping-pong of the back and forth arguments being made on this topic is Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) between two countries, be it GBP/THB or USD/THB or even GBP/USD (these being related to the 3 countries most-mentioned in the thread). This also can explain the attraction to foreigners of pursuing jobs or careers here as opposed to their home countries, I feel. Check the "Big Mac Index", for example.
