'United against racism', Germans stage mass protest against far right

BERLIN (Reuters) - Protestors from across Germany marched through Berlin on Saturday against racism, xenophobia and the far right in one of the country's biggest rallies of recent years.

Organisers put the turnout at 242,000 people for the demonstration, which followed anti-immigration protests in several eastern cities over the summer and a rise in support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party before a state election on Sunday.

A police spokesman declined to estimate the size of the crowd at the march, which was organised by a broad alliance of associations, labour unions, parties and rights groups including Amnesty International.

Marchers carried placards reading "Build bridges not walls", "United against racism" and "We are indivisible - for an open and free society". Some danced to pop music on a warm autumn day.

The arrival of more than a million migrants, many from war zones in the Middle East, has boosted support for the AfD.

It is expected to fare well in the election in Bavaria, long a stronghold of the conservative Christian Social Union, a member of the Chancellor Angela Merkel's federal coalition government.

In August, far-right groups in the eastern city of Chemnitz clashed with police and chased people they believed to be foreign after the fatal stabbing of a German man blamed on two migrants. Similar protests took place in Dresden, Koethen and other eastern cities.

Merkel has accused AfD politicians of using the violent protests to stir up social tensions.

Nevertheless, the number of violent attacks on refugees and asylum shelters in Germany has fallen sharply in the first half of this year.

Two companies have also warned their German employees about the dangers of populism before the regional election in Bavaria while the head of the BDI industry association has said the economy could be hurt by a wave of nationalism.

If citizens of a country become concerned by what they feel is excessive immigration, does that automatically make them racist ?

I have often observed that some of the most racist people are the very ones that like to throw the word in other peoples faces. For them , every argument on appropriate immigration is reduced to one of race.

The Thais are currently cracking down on foreigners who are ignoring the visa rules. Is this racist or is it justified ?

That depends on the reason why they think immigration levels are "excessive" and how their "concern" is manifested.  Is it because there are too many immigrants from tihs-hole countries and not enough from Norway?  Then yes, that makes them racist.

Another "that depends" question.  Are they cracking down on everyone who is ignoring the rules, or only on those who are the wrong color?

....build bridges not walls......sic

That would have to be the most worn out tiresome clique in the street protest industry.

It doesnt actually mean anything unless youre an engineer or architect.

The great irony is the militant looney left have unwittingly created this far right movement and have no-one to blame but themselves. All this PC and gender equalty garbage is driving most to distraction.

If the SS Titanic hit an iceberg tonight in the Atlantic ocean all the feminists ,gays and cross dressers would be pushing their way to the lifeboats. " Women first, women first !!!!!"

Men have to be gentlemen and go down with the ship .  Women first !!!!

There's no turning back now.

The world is turning full circle.

It's 'multiculturalism' that's the real problem, most people don't want anyone around them that isn't from the same culture. And I mean exactly the same culture, not even slightly different. As a Catholic, I don't want Jehovah's witness or Mormons around me.

Name one place in the world where 'multiculturalism' improved everyone's life and didn't lead to discontent if not actual terrorism.

Not worried about gender equality any more, I just ignore women (and most men).

Germany and most of Europe seem to have gone insane in their desire to self-destruct.

they do not represent german society with their moral faschist ideas of open border nonsense, gender lunacy and fruitless socialist waste talk. 18 % of germans are afd party voters , which represents approx. 13 million voters, who object . thereto sarah wagenknecht leading left wing figure abstained from the venue as she said, the idea of open borders was nonsense.

latest polls show cdu/csu 26 %, afd 18 %, spd 15 % a decline of 5.8 % to september 2017 people who are tired of winning vote for socialist and would not fit into reality.

I would claim it was my idea if I could, but many others have had the same thoughts before me.

Still waiting for you to name your improved multicultural society?

Every nation that is multicultural has been improved across, culturally, economically.

But arguing that with an overt xenophobe is pointless.

If you had the courage of your own convictions and went back to live where you were born I'd have more time for  your arguments.

What a hypocrite!

You are a foreigner, different skin colour, different religion, different culture... living in THAILAND married to a Thai women, yet you are against people doing that in your own country!!!!!!!!  If you had the strength of your convictions you should get a divorce and go home to protect you beliefs.

The strange thing is that immigration into much of Europe seems to be tolerated and even encouraged by a significant number of the populace, yet it costs the host countries a significant amount in housing, benefits, integration, health provision, education, etc. There may be some benefits of low-wage workers, but these invariably undercut their own nationals and keep wages depressed, (and much of this income is exported back to their places of origin).

Compare that to immigration to other places (such as Thailand) where "immigrants" such as western expats & retirees cost the host country nothing, but provide a valuable source of foreign income.  These are often the most xenophobic places with large numbers of the populace trying to discourage the expats.

As a non-Christian and a biologist I don't want any Christians around, nor do I want to support any evolutionary white trash. If the majority of Germans are evolutionary losers (i.e. unfit for the labour market), then I don't want the majority of these Germans around.

Many Germans protest against British and American influences in Germany nowadays.

Pattaya (where I live) is full of British and American veterans, many of them participated in the 1954 air bridge to West Berlin. They say those Germans protesting against British and American influences in Germany are simply not fair.

UK accepted some 50 pct immigrants from former Commonwealth nations, and the U.S.A. consists mostly of immigrants anyway. It is also not fair if the Germans now refuse to take their share of the white man's burden.

If Germany is not able to handle this, then it's time those Krauts disappear from the political landscape forever - before they can destroy the rest of the world.

Germany, like Sweden, UK and France, are over and done - suicide by Islam

Rather suicide by arrogance.

Islam destroyed none of the ASEAN nations as far as I can see.

Most Germans that permanently yell "Islam doesn't belong  to us" wouldn't even be able to spot a Muslim or a Muslima even if he/she were standing right in front of them. Like all these waitresses in Bangkok-Banglamphu - none of these German right-wingers is aware that a substantial portion of them are Muslima.

Wrong again.

There are all kinds of highly qualified immigrants holding good job positions in global corporations like the bank where I worked in.

These are the persons that Germany needs to keep the social security system ongoing. Not the countless welfare scroungers that think they have a given privilege just by the colour of their skin.

Btw, I don't feel discouraged here in Thailand. Things might get a bit harder for me as a person, but I'm used to challenges. I'm happy when this young Thai lady is happy because her daughter can go to university now. Like any other young girl in the world should be able to.

And I certainly don't want to hear the word "unpatriotic" from any German again.

Btw, the current German government encourages the rally in Berlin. And for the first time after decades I agree with the German government (in this matter)

The United States of America and Singapore.

Do they have;
- open borders that anyone can cross without passport?
- wellfare for illegals? and by wellfare I mean accommodation, healthcare incl. dental and monthly allowance.
- fast track for illegals to jobs that enables them to apply for residency?

- a network (with taxpayers money) of lawyers, translators, immigration consultants etc. for illegals?
etc...

Too many foreigners in the EU for me.

I prefer it here.

Oh the irony.

Bemoans multiculturalism, but in real life probably can barely string five words of Thai together.

Talk about not fitting in...

The anti-immigrant immigrant strikes again.

Off topic again, (please this is a thread about Germany, not me)

I speak, read and write Thai just fine thanks.

But I'm not an immigrant (says so on my VISA), if I didn't have a Thai son to look after, I probably wouldn't be here.

What is  the other 59%?  If they are in fact the majority, why do they yield power to the minority?
