He explained that it will be difficult to control the substance once it is declared legal for medical purposes, because some people might start complaining about pain just to get their hands on the narcotic.

Absolute nonsense. There are primarily two substances of interest in the cannabis plant: CBD, which has most of the medical benefits and doesn't get you stoned; THC which gets you stoned. There are rare types of seizure that benefit from CBD+THC but there wouldn't be much money in that. The main moneyspinner would be CBD, which can work well for depression, epilepsy, other seizures, neuralgia and other types of neuropathic pain. Typically, CBD comes from a type of cannabis plant (eg hemp) with high amounts of CBD and minuscule amounts of THC. So there is no chance at all of stoners claiming aches and pains to get high on it.

The main problem for the government, as I see it, is that legal hemp farms could easily grow (and sell) regular cannabis without it being detected.

Initially, all they have to do is make cannabis extracts legal ONLY if they contain less than 0.x% of THC.

I like South Africa's solution - It is now legal to grow (not sure how many plants), and consume weed in a private residence. It is still illegal to sell, or carry. Allowing pot smokers to grow their own supply reduces the demand on illegal sources, which can only be a good thing.

Home grown plus legal medical weed should be the first step, long before fully legalised weed. Canada is experiencing a big shortage in supply, which is benefiting black market suppliers. The supply should definitely be in place before the demand comes.

Weed will be everywhere soon, for medical purpose or recreational, and nobody will be able to stop it. Fiick every single cop who was making money on innocent foreigners who had been smoking weed in this country.

While I support your sentiment, I have to say there are tens of thousands of Thais who get sent down for pretty minor (weed) offenses, as they don't have the option, or the means to bribe their way out of it. Legalising weed will have a far greater benefit to locals, than any foreigner.

Don't expect coffee shops, like Amsterdam; not for a long time, sadly. But hopefully there will be better tunes in the karaoke bars...

I have never met anyone 'addicted' to weed...

Paranoid maybe? Or maybe it is an easy excuse for not changing your habits. Perhaps beer is a bigger problem?

If you are happy in your life then why care about what you 'could be' ...is the advice I am constantly giving myself.

I would still be a proponent of regulations in the work place.  Don't want the employees turning up drunk or stoned, or, drunk AND stoned.   But when it's time to wind down with no serious agenda the next day, smokin' a little bit of weed is fairly benign vs. slamming a bunch of beers/whiskey (whatever) and getting drunk.    Pro is there's no hang over with weed, and it doesn't make you fat.... except the munchies - that'll do it. ????

No matter what any pro-weed enthusiast says though, it's just not good to inhale by-products of combustion, and that includes marijuana.   Inhaling the hot smoke from shit that's on fire, is never good fer yer lungs.

You beat me to it.  He is right the junta generate a plan, but planning, clarity, discussions just aint their style, just barge and bungle along.

In the US, girl scouts are not allowed to sell their cookies within 200 yards of a cannabis dispensary.  Thailand could adopt similar rules for food vendors as well.

Rules, rules, rules,...Is Thailand so strong in enforcing rules ???

Some asked what countries have legalized it, I made a post listing a bunch of western countries that have legalized it, directly answering an asked question, and my post got deleted.

This has happened to me quite a few times lately, totally innocuous and relevant posts of mine disappearing, why?

This doctor shouldn't even be cited as an "expert" on marijuana.  His views are simply outdated.  Wish I could ask him if cigarettes and alcohol should be outlawed.  Of course doctors should discourage pot smoking, cigarette smoking, and even alcohol.  But draconian laws are just impractical and nonsensical and violates our most basic freedom of choice.  It just seems like Asia in general is pretty backwards when it comes to marijuana.  Heck, look what S. Korea is doing about Canada's new marijuana law...

[“Weed smokers will be punished according to the Korean law, even if they did so in countries where smoking marijuana is legal. There won’t be an exception...."  South Korean law is based on the concept that laws made in Seoul still apply to citizens anywhere in the world, and violations, even while abroad, can technically lead to punishment when they return home. Those who smoke weed could face up to five years in prison. ]

2Prior to 1979 the sale and consumption Marijuana was legal in Thailand....maybe that is why Thailand was once known as the land of smiles.

Except the Marijuana Act was passed in 1934 and it has been illegal since then.

Thailand is the hub of quackery and legalising "medical marijuana" will open the door to every quack and charlatan in the region - they must be rubbing their hands and preparing their BS websites as we speak.

Really? Which "many countries" would that be, Mr. Thira?

As far as I am aware (and I am not a "Thai expert"), there is only a tiny handful of countries that has approved marijuana (or cannabinoids) for medicinal use, and even fewer have completely legalized it.

How's this for 'a tiny handful' that use it medicinally.. Quite a large tiny hand really....

Of course though, this list is way shorter than those countries which use opium based medicines...

Argentina  Germany Netherlands
Australia Greece Norway
Canada Israel Peru
Chile Italy Poland
Colombia Jamaica Romania
Croatia Lesotho San Marino
Cyprus Luxembourg Switzerland
Czech Republic Macedonia Turkey
Denmark Malta

Uruguay

Finland Mexico Zimbabwe

I thought the tests were already done, and crops are being established for medicinal purposes.

Initial findings were.

Dumb, and more dumber.

(But legally dumber).

It's hard enough to get a straight answer now, without any legalised contribution.

I.e. wacky backy.

The difference is that pizza hut you don't need a university education,  just bang 50 baht on.

Where as 7/11 (as mentioned in other threads) have university education and use more calculated means to fiddle you.

Rumor has it there's a Thai medicine man living in a tree house up in Chiang Rai, who grows an ancient, secret strain of marijuana that helps makes your skin whiter.  It's true, you can look it up on Facebook.  ????
