‘Golden bell’ to keep police officers awake in Region 1

In a move to keep police officers awake and alert during duty hours, Provincial Police Region 1 acting chief Pol Maj-General Ampol Buarapporn has ordered that a bell be rung every hour at all 134 precincts under his jurisdiction.

 

On Monday, Ampol led senior police officers to witness the implementation of the bell-ringing project dubbed “Rakhang Thong” (golden bell) in Nonthaburi’s Muang district. Officers were seen ringing the bell, installed in front of the precinct’s building, every hour at a volume that could only be heard within the premises.

 

 

The acting chief has also instructed officers to take frequent walks around the premises to ensure order and keep an eye on the detained suspects.

 

Ampol also inspected the progress of another project called “Pak Krod”, under which police officers are required to gather information, analyse issues and set a guideline for the prevention of drug-trafficking and other crimes.

 

Officers are also required to keep an eye out for drug-abusers and take them in for rehabilitation.

 

The police chief also led the team to visit Wat Nakhon In in Muang district and the Prasert Islam community in Pak Kret district to follow up on the project.

You just gotta laugh, now they are ringing a bell to keep the lazy bar stewards awake.

I'm sure walking the streets, making sure the public are safe, would be a better method.

Also serves to keep the citizenry aware that there are police present, don't forget to keep some small-denomination notes handy.

Which simple mind came up with that, children's behavior!

Instead of that he should plan controls around the around the clock and random checkpoints changing place every 15 minutes, that keep them awake and busy.

I'm incredulous at the consistently atrocious standards in Thailand not only widely accepted but so openly advertised with such an open level of ignorance....

 

After 20 years I'm continually left jaw agape that such a lovely country can do so much to self harm - perhaps this is part of the charm. 

Great....people can now ring the bell and make merit with a donation. Just like a temple.

That'll be the guy who's recently been moved to his 'inactive position'...  Well, it would seem that the majority of positions are inactive if the BiB have to be woken every hour !

Someone must have made a good business delivering those bells, most probably at inflated prices.

Better would be to force them to pay 500 baht if another officer photographs them while sleeping.

I rang a bell once in Pattaya .. Cost me a bloody fortune so if he's linging one every hour he wants a well padded wallet that's all I can say .. 

Maybe they should get these bells at all police stations.

With the correct Handle and chain, that is.

Nah,  They will sleep through that, no problem.

But try and get your ATM card out with out making a noise, or open a cold Chang,  and the whole village will be awake in two seconds flat.

In a move to continue doing what they were doing, affected police officers have resorted to using these:

 

Officer's wife: "How was work today?"

Officer: "the hell with this job, we have to wake up every hours now"

All Thais know this custom. It has been employed by watchmen for centuries here. I thought it had pretty much died out but never underestimate the conservatism and reactionary nature of the ruling classes here and their constant harking back to the golden age that never existed.

 

Who bought the bells by the way? If I were an auditor, I would take a look at that procurement.
