PHUKET: Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana yesterday (Nov 2) led a team of officials to conduct safety checks on ferries and other tourist boats operating out of Chalong Pier as part of the annual safety drive ahead of the high season.

Governor Phakaphong carried out the inspection together with Vice Governor Supoj Rotreuang Na Nongkhai and other officials yesterday afternoon.

Chalong Pier was the first port of call for Governor Phakaphong and his team as it is the main departure point for many day trips going out to the popular islands in Phang Nga Bay and along the Andaman coast.

That would read better if it said "The Governor and a team of qualified marine engineers inspected boats....."

Agree.

Further, who asked the question, the governor or the qualified marine engineers?

And do the qualified marine engineers have some certification about marine safety.

And is there now some 'secret shopper' activity in process to observe what's actually happening / check if all laws and regulations are being adhered to in every detail? If YES who do the secret shopper team report to?

seems all the water boys were getting their annual envelopes, doubt these people would know port from starboard let alone how safe the boats actually were

Some how this team of officials does not give me great confidence. Better then nothing maybe....

Or maybe making things more dangerous if signed off by unqualified people.

IMO stories like this hold no merit, it is plain and simple showboating. Safety checks should be an on-going process, not a one-off photo opportunity so obviously directed at the Chinese tourist market. They should be left to the professionals who are qualified (yes, they are out there!) to sign-off.

But all boats and ferries were inspected in just one afternoon? How many boats, how many inspectors and how detailed were the inspections? Luckily, lightning strikes do not count when recording accidents where any blame can be accorded to the owners or operators, so the recent incident, although not good publicity, is not particularly bad either, as it could happen anywhere.
