Quervains Tendonitis

Featured Replies

I know it's a longer medical name.

The questions I want to ask, has anyone out there suffered and especially important did they get the cortisone injection.

It seems the injection might have side effects ranging from mild to severe so any info' will good.

Thanks in advance.

I’ve had the injection twice about a year apart. Works a charm with no side effects in my case.

Thanks. It isn't for me it's for someone I know who is quite worried about it.

Did the injection clear it totally or does it return?

I've had cortisone injections twice in my arthritic knees.  First set was very effective for about 5 months.  Second set six months after the first were not quite as effective; still helped, but not as much.

I was warned that extended use of cortisone can soften and weaken bones.

Cortisone only works if there is inflammation present.

From talking to the sufferer it is inflamation of the thumb tendons where they cross the wrist.

Even after a lot of googling I'm still not clear on what causes it. Similar to RSI maybe??

Doc told me if I continued to put stress on the thumb by working in the garden it could return. The injection cleared it completely and it was fine for about a year but of course I didn’t stop working and it returned. The second injection cleared it up once again. Apparently there is a minor surgery that can correct the problem but for now the injection solves the problem.

Thanks. The person involved is an office worker and spends a lot of time on the keyboard but I can't imagine that would cause it, maybe I'm wrong though.

Due to repetitive motions/postures

As with carpal tunnel syndrome, initial management is splinting/rest and antinflammatories, if not sufficient  steroid injections but not advised to do that more than 1-2 times, then surgery. Fairly simple outpatient surgical procedure, my sister had it done.

A single steroid injection if done early enough will often be sufficient for sure but one does, of course, have to avoid/minimize the movements which caused it.
