Satellite Internet Link

Featured Replies

This is my 1st post at home (I normally post from work).. we have just had the satellite internet service installed today;

While I was at at the office I got a call from Wattanagh (Sat Internet Co) to say they were ready to install the sat.int. at our home, I had called in last week to subscribe because where we live has no telephone line facility, we pay 2,500 THB for this privilege.

Anyway, they installed the dish this afternoon..

I have finished work and returned home, the sight I meet on entering my abode makes me LITERALLY stagger back a few steps The dish is HUGE !! diameter about 1.5 metres.. not only that they have installed a thick black cable from the living room (from the Satellite box) to the ceiling, runs across the top of the wall out to the dish.... UGLY installation, my landlord is visiting tomorrow.. him I can handle Its his Thai wife whoo I cant :o

I am just sorry I wasn't here when they did it = they installed it when my partner was present, I cannot blame her as she was pre-occupied with our son.

And just for the record, the connection is 80% Okay

Anyone else got Satellite internet connection? how much do you pay? Is it worth it? How good is it?

Heli :D

can you give more details about the system, price, vendor?

THe box is an Ipstar Broadband speed is 256/128 - the basic home package

We heard about it from a friend, a Computer Shop opposite Foodland on Pattaya Klang.

Is it sometimes tempremental (sic) but generally its okay

I would recommend a 1m dish for reliable UBC connection.

Not sure to IPSTar.

Make sure it is a solid dish as the Ku band signals leak though the holes in the old mesh dishes used for C-band.

Had our TOT iPStar dish installed last week and you are right it is a beast.

Glad I was home to supervise installation as they would have put it where they wanted it, i.e the easiest place for them not the best place for you.

I asked them to run the cable thruogh the roof void and they looked at me like I was asking them to

jump through flaming hoops.Got it done in the end but i think they need to learn some installation skills.

Cost 2000 B installation ( special offer)

1500 B month 128/256 basic home

Connection is fine so far

I used to use gprs so this is worth it as my son can be online any time without using my mobile

I have the TOT IPStar connection.

Everything is fine except there is a certain latency before connections get established. So if I start Thaivisa.com, then it will take a few seconds, then everything seems the same.

Notmally this is not a problem unless you are using an application that sends lont of little packets, rather than larger ones. So if you can change the Max MTU size and the Packet size on your client machine all the better.

You will find that applications like Lotus Notes is very difficult to use, as its sends so many small packets, and waits for a reply, before sending more.

I have the TOT iPSTAR as well, 256/128 busines package for 2200 Baht/month...

A picture of the TOT installation team:

They needed 14 technicians, 2 pick-ups, 1 minivan and about 6 hours to get it going :o

Happy with it so far, goes hardly ever down, delivers on speed promised etc...

Same drawback as Khutan mentioned, big latency (delay) on every request (packet) sent, but not to be helped due to the distance the signals have to travel through the satellite (145000 km just for the roundtrip to Bangkok earth station!)...
