Drone footage shows resurfaced Phoenix moored at Phuket pier

Thailand on Saturday raised the shipwreck that killed 47 Chinese tourists in July, part of an ongoing investigation into the cause of the boat capsizing, officials said.

Drone footage uploaded to Facebook on Sunday showed the vessel moored at a pier in Phuket.

Just think how many ghosts there are!

Let us hope a properly trained accident investigation forensic team can discover what caused the disaster.

Agreed.  Also, notice how the vessel is all closed in (although the windows are now broken in or removed).

When she topples over, everyone is trapped inside, it floods, and inside a minute or two all are drowned.

I was involved in assisting with tourist boat rebuilds for many years. Any advice I gave for safe passenger numbers on the decks based on sound engineering and stability caculations were always swiftly ignorred.

In truth, I have never seen a stability/heeling test carried out on a single passenger boat licensed to operate in Thai waters. The video below shows passengers being used to carry out such a test, however, it is common to use large containers or large lift bags of water instead of passengers to create extreme heeling conditions. You can get an idea of just how little is understood in the average boatyard, then you see the plimsoll mark painted on the bridge ????????  That really is funny stuff.

The math is not that complex and should not take more than a single cup of coffee for any high school science graduate tto sort out. (see link here>>> https://fas.org/man/dod-101/navy/docs/swos/dca/stg4-01.html

In LOS,  it is apparent that boat owners are able to pack on as many passengers on as they wanted in exchange for an 'express processing fee' to the local Marine surveyor in charge of licensing the passenger numbers the boat was legally allowed to carry - There is your problem.

Great footage. Now let's get answers.

Really? Send me an image of 50 peeps next time and show me how they move freely without any hassle. One push to the side and they all died. let me tell explain: Greed is what this was all about without any safety precautions in consideration. Thank you.

I’d like to see the stability calks.on that one Thailand needs to join the first world proper engineering inspections crew training and licensing proper drills random drug testing I’m sure the USCG would be honered to help in this regard rip to all the lost and deepest condolences to the family’s of the lost

Nope, that is a barge, not a pier

With bench seating or even regular seating not hard to fit 80 people in.  A lot harder to get 50 people out once the flooding starts or the boat capsizes.

I could be wrong here, but isn't that the same barge used by the initial, failed salvagers?

Perhaps it was thought it could be of some use in bringing the wreck back to shore while the Singaporeans headed home.

I note they seem to have misjudged tides, or missed the channel, and run aground. The towing tug is working hard to try to move it.

Why are you verbally aggressive?  As an ex-member of the society of sea rescuers SNSM all I said the size of such a boat is undoubtedly enough to take onboard 50 people, BUT…saying that I'm not defending anyone, I was just answering about the size of the boat the size nothing else. Mainly this sentence: How in the world did they fit 50 people inside that boat? with the ridiculous Did they hire a Japanese train pusher?

A better question would be which shipyard built this boat? With probably no competent naval architect, for it has a very important windage probably not sufficiently compensated by probably almost no keel. The horsepower was probably another problem it is crucial when the sea begins to be rough it was more likely not enough as well.

So probably a boat not seaworthy at all, plus at the helm, a man incapable to steer in bad weather and all the conditions are met for what unfortunately happened. But again a boat this size can take 50 passengers on board!

One second ago I just realise,   Googling for this story, the Phoenix carried 101 people, including 89 tourists, 11 crew members so nothing to do with 50 people, had I read “ How in the world did they fit 101 people inside that boat? Did they hire a Japanese train pusher” I would not have answered like I did. On the other hand, it confirms I was right sufficed to see another picture of the boat's size to understand about the 50 people.

In other words: you don't know the boat or the operation, but are quick to judge anyway.

Not at all I did not judge anything, someone said 50 people were too much for this boat I said no.

Please read again for the following  I started by "A better question would be,  I should have written better questions would be.

Exactly. Immediately after the accident phone video inside the main seating area. That video appears no longer available. Basic seating, all appeared to have clunky basic flotation devices. All terrified. No way all could safely evacuate through the only main door when water pouring in.  Needed a better evacuation plane with many exits.

So all your 'probables' had no meaning.

I think that first video was from the other boats that got into problems at the same time.

Due to one member's comment, I first wrongly understood there were 50 people aboard this boat, now I know it was 101 people, it changes everything.

At the time it was very confusing, that video was initially thought to be from the Phoenix, but was actually the Serenita. No passengers were lost from that vessel.

48 people dying at the same time due to lack of oxygen isn't the way I'd want to go as part of a group-death.

I disagree. The Serenita had all western tourists, The Video I saw was all Chinese.

Let's not argue.  Terrible death.

No, also serenita had exclusively Chinese tourists.

I stand corrected. Thought I had read all westerners survived. Maybe I mixed up with another smaller boat. But only 2 sank.

I think we were all a bit confused by the media coverage at the time. Two Russians were also rescued from a jet ski the time.

This is the footage I remember seeing:

I now believe the video was taken inside a rescue boat belonging to LoveAndaman, and is not one of the vessels that sank. Their logo can be seen on the crew lifejackets. It is one of those extra large speedboats. The crew are very bravely pulling in, even leaping into the water, to get survivors. These survivors can be seen inside the boat after rescue.

In the beginning of the video this boat is shown to be sinking. It's not the Phoenix, so I presume the Senerita.

Yes, it doubled the chance of sinking.
