Wichianburi police in Thailand's north east have announced the arrest of a man who they say was pretending to be an army major to defraud women.

Rachan Sawatrak, 35, was apprehended on charges of fraud and impersonation at his house in Kasetsomboon district of Chaiyaphum.

He was living there for three years with a woman who he is alleged to have conned out of 100,000 baht.

Six other woman in the past are said to have fallen for the charms of the "major".

Rachan said he was just a farmer and would only dress up as a soldier on veterans' days. The full truth would come out in court, he said, giving nothing more away.
