Noise, there has to be noise!

Featured Replies

Why is it the locals must modify their vehicles to produce maximum noise? I've often wondered. From Honda dream to 10 wheel truck and everything in between. There seems no limit on the noise here in Thailand and it's never enough. Does it indicate status, do the girls like it, is it to get some attention, what's up with that?

The thing is that the majority of "locals" do not do that.

Idiots do that in many countries where they can get away with it... It's just the dumb seeking attention...   In Thailand the Police are simply too bone-idle to really bother about it.

....similar used to happen in the UK with tools driving around with their Ford Escorts, Astras, Nova's etc (read: rubbish cheap cars - can't polish a t*rd... and now matter how they tried to roll it in glitter it was still a pish car !).... they'd drive through high streets across the uk windows open and some galactically pish music belting out....

Here in Thailand its the 'van-vans' with their souped-up hair drier's and orange haired 'sequoiy' desperately hanging on for dear life...

(Van-Van = term for kids revving & racing their scooters)

(Sequoiy = term for their girlfriend, usually in daisy-duke jeans, a tight top and died orange hair!)

When I was 'young' we fitted to our 'mini varients' ... at times had mini/cooper/cooper S ... think what we called a straight through exhaust ... was just a phase ... a little later changed to wanting a quite saloon ... probably same over here ...just takes them a few extra years ..

One thing great about Thailand they never hit horns like frenzy. Went back to China or Vietnam and I cant get a sleep

Now watching a stocko motor accelerates like turtle - despite their fart can roars, sometimes laughable & charming????

Radbourne straight through box...????

Back home my fun ride had twin 3.5 inch pipes with race mufflers on the street....What heavenly music...????

It's not just a Thai thing, it's in most countries.. back in the day when we were 16, the exhaust was the first thing to change on our 50cc mopeds as that would easily double the top speed (and noise). Those modified 125cc:s here in Thailand do sound really annoying though..

I agree about those trucks and other commercial vehicles, that is a big w tf when you see those loud bucket cans on them. Just makes me wonder why?? Only in Thailand.. Those trucks and buses from the 80s belong to the junk yard.. really hope the govt will do something before I die of breathing that black smoke.

And if we are talking high performance big bikes, you can get up to a 25hp power increase and 10kg weight loss with a full titanium system, high flow air filter and ECU reflash. That's a massive difference.. Modern bikes come with hideous chimneys and overweight catalytic converters to meet Euro 4 regs.. they are not there to stay. Second, if you ride a big bike in Bangkok daily you will find quickly that a quiet bike is super dangerous with the constant flow of idiots cutting in front of you.

Why do they do it?....I think for the obvious reasons....for young men to appear cool, get noticed by their mates and the ladies and a bit of bravado. Ladies have a different method for producing the same results (much nicer).

evil spirits run away from noise

It's a world-wide phenomena for the youth. When I was young, we only did it on 8 cylinder vehicles which produced a very throaty sound. It was taboo to do it on a 6. But now I hear it on vehicles with 'sewing machine' motors and twice as loud as decades ago but crap sounding. Transam knows what I'm talking about.

Same for motorcycles. They're all big bike wannabes riding noisy little bikes.

Go spend a week in any major Indian city and you'll come back and tell how quiet Thailand is.

I modified my vacuum cleaner.

Vroom! Earth shaking.

It still sucks, though.

No difference to me when I was young, we all liked to have a car that sounded cool. Eventually the novelty wears off.

What I don't get here is the need for base boom boom speakers at parties, weddings, whatever, so loud that one Soi away your windows in your house are vibrating. Been to a few functions over the years and had to leave because you can't even talk to anybody at the same table.

Is it a case of community statue, if my dick is bigger than yours I will hire bigger speakers??????

Modified exhaust sounds good if done right. If not then annoy so much. Just to be loud is not good just like jow6so many thais build loud sound systems in their cars and trucks but they sound like shit.

A known fact for most intelligent people, empty vessels make the most noise

This is my number 1 thing than annoys me here.  Seems every day there is some party going on where I live.  I don't mind the loud music, but I HATE the booming base beat. Music from the temple, funerals, house warming parties, weddings, opening shops, kids with music blasting form their pick up trucks parked in the yard etc...

This week there was a house warming party going on 3 villages away.  The base was so loud and going on 3 days from early morning till midnight.  It sounded like a huge festival so I decided to go take a look, see if there was some fair going on or a live band etc.

I followed the noise to find the  house when out cycling one evening and I was astonished that the house was tiny, the speaker was the biggest I even seen... a huge flat square thing nearly the size of the house side wall.... and the best bit was there were only the house owner couple, a child and 2 guests...….for all that noise!!!!

They were sitting right in front of it.  I don't get it at all how they can tolerate the noise, or why they want to sit there without hearing themselves think for 3 days! The yard was only small with no more than 4 tables there, so there must never have been many people.

These things must be a status symbol I guess.  Found it really pathetic and selfish to annoy the neighbours with such loud continuous noise for so long.

Phew, rant over!

It's the same in malls like Paragon and the lot....everything perfect for shopping untill the LOUD announcements about discount start and conversation gets impossible.

Last week in a shop i asked the cash price for a topmodel fridge...after 15 minutes i finally had a sales being able to tell me that..(and 6 salesman around me)...when i was asking about deliver the music started VERY LOUD so we couldn't conversate anymore...then i left very confused...what a crappy salesmanager they had.

Asking the wrong question , should be : why does the Thai police not enforce the law  and give these offenders a nose bleed fine
