Thailand car insurance and who is covered?

Featured Replies

I have a car in my name along with insurance. I will be leaving Thailand and want to lend my car to a friend that will be coming to Thailand. I have a few questions though:

1. If they get in an accident with my car does the car insurance cover them?

2. Do I bear any responsibility if they get tickets or wrecks from my car that is under my name?

3. Will tickets or wrecks from someone else cause my insurance to go up?

4. Is there a way to temporarily just switch the insurance in my name to their names for my car?

This is my understanding, no warranty implied or inferred.

1. Yes, they will be covered unless you took a named-driver discount.

2. Tickets will come to your address, you pay them. Not sure if it's possible to say you weren't driving (I always was).

3. Yes, certainly bumps that are claimed against your policy will cause a price increase next time.

4. Since the current policy is "any driver" there's no mechanism to change the name.

What period are we talking here? If it's a long time then you could cancel your insurance and your friend take out his own policy. But of course you then have to trust that he'll go for decent cover.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Have a chat with the insurance company...Ask if your friend requires an IDP along with his license to be covered...☺️

No such thing as "Thailand car insurence". You have made a contract with your insurance company. READ it. Asking is a good idea but unless you have it in your contract, its useless. Mouth to ear advice often is wrong ,often misunderstood.

In thailand the maximum the insurance would pay is very limited. READ your contact! NO ONE here knows your contract.

I am god but I refuse to admit it!
