PM steps in to help two abandoned boys in Amnat Charoen

By The Nation

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed the Social Development and Human Security Ministry to send officials to help two brothers abandoned by their mother at a rented house in Amnat Charoen.

Government Spokesman Putthipong Punnakan on Monday said General Prayut had learned of the plight of the two children via social media and reports, and had instructed the ministry to help the 10-year-old boy and his one-year-old brother as a matter of urgency.

Sudarat Phakdee, 15, a neighbour, said the boys’ mother had asked her to watch over the boys during the evening of December 10 at their rented room on Soi Klong Chon Prathan in Tambon Moong, in Amnat Charoen’s Mueang district.

The mother said she would be away only briefly and took a taxi motorcycle, but did not return.

Sudarat said that as a teenager, she had no money to buy milk for the younger brother, and she therefore informed Wanphen Sintem, chairwoman of the Ban Lad Kham community, who in turn posted the story on a Facebook wall to seek help from social-media users in locating the mother.

Putthipong said the Social Development and Human Security Ministry had been instructed to try to locate the mother and provide all living necessities for the two boys pending her return.

Moreover, after the prime minister learned that the elder brother did not go to school, officials were also told to help him get him into schooling.

The PM also told the ministry to check all provinces to establish whether there were other instances of children abandoned by their parents, so that they too could receive help from the state, the spokesman added.
