Wife and baby fall from top of Bhumibol bridge after 100 meter plunge

A truck driver watched in horror as his young wife and baby fell 100 meters to their deaths yesterday. 

 

Thirty six year old Phairat was inconsolable as he hugged the corpse of his one year old daughter  and wife Suphaporn, also 36. 

 

The 18 wheel truck driver was making a final delivery before going home for the holidays with his family. 

 

A front tire exploded causing him to lose control on the Bhumibol bridge in Phrapadaeng. He hit the side wall of the bridge and his wife and child who were passengers were thrown from the cab to their deaths 100 meters below. 

 

A large crowd gathered at the heartbreaking scene as Phairat cried for his loss, reported Sanook.

 

Sanook said that four people died in road accidents in Samut Prakan yesterday.

When was the last time he changed the tires? And was the tire pressure correct?

Check vehicle for road worthiness. Drivers job. Make sure all passengers are wearing seatbelts. Drivers job.

Hmm, it's one thing to call them (include me in that) smart-<deleted>, but most of us foreigners recognise cause and effect, and have been brought up to use critical thinking - something which is not common here.

This is also Thailand and you are probably familiar with 'health and safety' practices that bear no resemblance to those in the west.

 

Two family members have just lost their lives and I don't see that being the appropriate time to play the blame game.

I agree much of what happens here is preventable, that does not mean that the guy has no right to grieve (everyone has) but sometimes it would be good to take some own responsibility too. If a MC kills himself because he has no helmet on I have less pity for them then for one that did have his helmet on. Same for car drivers without seat-belt.

 

Its of course a huge loss for this guy but it "might" have been prevented by seat-belts or better maintenance. Its not often that a tire just explodes when they are in good condition.

You and I differ a bit if things are caused by own failure then i feel less pitty for the victims then when it happens when all care has been taken. 

 

Maybe it is time to play the blame game and educate people how stuff like this could have been prevented. It seems not playing the blame game is the reason things don't change.

 

I don't wear a helmet or put on my seat belt because i fear the police but because i fear the results when things do go wrong. My Thai GF is the same not all Thais are like you describe because a big group can think for themselves. 

 

The government should put some money in video's of accidents and not only those you see when you have to change / extend your license. 

 

Remember the U turn the government did on riding in the back of pickups ? People should understand its dangerous and if they do so its their own fault if things go wrong.

In order for Thais to want to change, they need to realise what causes so many of these 'accidents' and how they can be prevented - by showing them.

By discussing it, hopefully others on the forum will be encouraged to do the same, so I wouldn't agree that posting on TV will not contribute to Thais upping their game.

I'd agree with that. I've shown my wife and son youtube videos of fatalities caused by not wearing a helmet. While they both would rather look away and avoid the hard truth, at least they have seen that wearing a helmet is worthwhile.

 

Over twelve years ago I was hit by a pickup while on my motorbike. I was reported to the police as a fatality - not as injured.

My helmet had scratches on one side from it being pushed along the concrete by the wheel of the pickup, and rubber marks on the other side from the pickup's tyre. The driver didn't stop.

If I hadn't been wearing a helmet I wouldn't be here now, something I remind people of when the subject of motorbike helmets comes up.

Its not about my posts or yours but when the Thais start attributing blame things can change. As long as they see it all as an accident without attributing blame nothing will ever change. I remember an UK road show where they examined accidents and attributed blame, design of road, or driving to fast ect ect. By looking at that you learn, that is what should happen here and it wont happen without anyone attributing blame. 

 

And yes you can mourn whoever you want and so can I it a real sad event that the guy lost his wife and baby like this even more sad if it could have been prevented.

Awful,my heart goes out to all involved,but surely a working seatbelt would or more than likely saved the wife,the baby well probably not as no doubt she was cradling him,really a truck cab is no place for a young baby,look Thai people love their kids like most of humanity,so i cannot understand why they constantly put them at grave risk on motorbikes and in cars,how many baby seats have you seen installed here,try to get rear passengers to wear belts almost impossible,10 people in the back of a pick up,banned then overturned because many people are too poor to travel any other way, i am sure they would be better poor than dead.

This is utterly and totally heart-wrenching... I cannot imagine the depth of this mans grief. I am brought to tears.

 

I think people posting comments on here about what he should have done to prevent this, and what Thai folks should or shouldn't do, don't perhaps understand the role of poverty in all this. I believe most of the population has very little income. When you are dirt poor, you don't have options. You can say all this guy had to do was control his tires...but when you are poor and you need this job like you need to breathe, you don't go complaining to the boss that the tires on the truck are compromised. You shut your mouth and do the job you were told to do. You learn to shut down critical thinking and not dwell much about your miserable plight. You have to hedge your bets on hope which is all you have. Yes, you should wear your seat belt. But learning that takes education which takes money and free time to study...which takes away time from work. And it goes against the whole survival attitude you have learned that hope will get you through. Perhaps the family was with him because that is their only transport. When you are poor, you cannot afford a car, or motorbike, or extra bus ticket (2!) to send the family back home. Or perhaps their home is so miserable it's more comfortable and less deadening to ride around in the truck. It's too easy to pass judgement not knowing, and not appreciating, the facts of another persons situation.

Seat-belts do save lives. I have rarely seen a Thai strapped in a seat-belt.

Some thais dont listen and especially to foreigners or anything that could be deemed coming from a foreign land like road rules, common sense, morals, science, etc. These certain Thais are lazy and seem to have trouble with simple thought. It appears too difficult or something like they have been brought up with out any education or discipline and believe getting drunk and taking cheap drugs is education enough and as grown up as they need to be.

It sort of seems for some its easier to pretend to be all knowledgable than actually be so.

I could give so many examples of stupid situations that i, my wife or the rest of the family have decided to intervene and add some percpective, opinions or common sense and such to better a situation and its all farang to them! I apparently dont know Thais, Thais are special, Inventors, scholars... blah, blah... Brainwashed more like it!

People like this cant ever follow rules or have sympathy, empathy for another before a tragedy when its all a game.

Im amazed that in all my long years here i think people are actually getting worse. Its the governments lack of care, over the top religious influence and especially a lack of education which in itself would lead to self reflection that might fix things up but lets face it the roads are pretty jammed, not a lot of useful land for sale. Its waaayyyy over populated.

Maybe the government is willingly accept thinning the herd.

This is definitely true. Except I believe the Thai reference is unfair and one should instead insert "people/person/any country." Thai folks and Thailand in no way have an exclusive on this. This behavior is everywhere and is part of the human condition, sad though that may be. The particulars might be different from country to country but not the overall mechanism. One thing a foreigner has is a different perspective and many things seem clear when living in a "new" country, things that go on in our own countries but to which we have become inured and blind. Same same but different.

And as you can see on the last photo it was a container semi trailor;

and the container is next to the trailer so was not attached properly.
He could have stumbled into another vehicle and made other victims.

Most likely this was not his own truck and the owner probably had no interest in replacing worn out tyres.  Re-treads for trucks are common in Thailand too, as evidenced by the large number of shed re-treads seen on expressways.

I don,t know about the rest of you but years ago, when I had very little money, I regularly used to drive my car until the tyres got totally bald and eventually blew out in transit. Never had any serious problem, just slowly braked and changed to the spare. Is it possible that there could have been a different cause of loss of control ?
