Before installing a fan, I would look at using the heat in the roof space to do the ventilation for you.

If you have end walls to your roof space consider putting in louvered vents. (Usually designed like windows with louvered shutters)

See attached example.

If you don't have end walls to your roof space consider adding vented tiles to your roof. I've been working on a design that includes two false chimneys that are actually vents into the roof space.

The principal is that the hot air in the roof rises and vents out naturally, no need for a fan, no need to use electricity, and with no fan, no fan noize (I've a friend who put a fan in and now has to put up with either heat, or the rumble of the fan vibration throughout the house).

If you use natural venting, remember a vent placed in each of the oposing parts of the roof (Sun lit part and shaded part) is the most effective at gettng a through draught (a bit like leaving a door open at the front and back of a house).

Also, if you are putting in vents, add burgler bars and insect screens. You want air to get in/out not vermin.

Guesthouse beat me to it :o

Definately try passive ventilation first, remember you need a way in for air at the bottom of the roof space as well (on the shady end). The Thais have been doing it for centuries.

All openings require mosquito screens at the minimum.

Hi Jimmy

You will find a range of the fans you require at that big old fashioned hardware store opposite Foodland on Pattaya Klang.

I bought the smallest big buggar they had--about 16 inch-- and duly installed it in the roof cavity.

It IS a bit noisy....but I don't expect to have it running all that often.

Time will tell.

Does it work?

Dunno....I came back to Oz a day or so after it was installed.

....I have also stuck 6 inch thich insulation in the ceiling cavity, along with one double glazed window...and an extra turbo fan in the roof.

Maybe I'll get more of those turbos.

I'm taking back 70% shade cloth to put over that double glazed window.

Good though it is....I want it to be even better.

( The electrician initially put the fan in the wrong way around...so be careful.)

My email is [email protected]

I get back to Pattaya on 2 march....Come and take a look

in a previous thread there was a discussion regarding turbo roof ventilators (outside air driven rotating devices)...you should have a look at that...cheap to buy and install...

also, as previously stated, if you have a ceiling then install 6" fiberglass ceiling insulation...makes a world of difference to the inside ambient temp...

fans require a power supply and regular maintenance (they get dirty and then the required power increases along with vibration problems)...best to avoid them if possible...

thanks for all the help. my attic is huge with constant sun on the concrete tile roof. I have the heat reflecting foil installed and I am going to put in R-19 +- insulation. My roof has no vertical walls to install louvers. there are air vents at the fascia where each tile has a hole to the outside air with a small screen which will suffice for the intake air. I was going to put in two large turbines but was changing my mind upon reading the other posts. maybe I will go back to the turbines with an attic fan as a backup. in Hawaii I had foil, r-19 insulation and a whole house fan in the living area ceiling and lots of ceiling fans and it always stayed cool even in direct sun

thanks for all your help
