Hi All,

Have been in Thailand over 10 years (48 year old male) but have never had reason to see a doctor here so would really appreciate some advice and guidance.

Quick background: Started to feel slight pains on the right side of my abdomen in early December, nothing v painful and would be very short and then disappear. Wouldn't happen every day and actually was more noticeable at night. I knew it was something new but wasn't much of a problem and put it down maybe to indigestion. Anyway roll on last week and the pains started to increase (still not very painful but definitely much stronger) and far more frequently. Pains would sometimes be at the top upper right and then in the mid right flank, kind of moved around. Now in the last day or two I have began to pee far more frequently / urgently and the colour is darker, there are also headaches which I never had.

Anyway with these changes I obviously want to go see a doctor and am looking for what Bangkok hospital would be best and who should I be asking for. Choices seem to be Bangkok Hospital, Bumungrad or Bangkok Christian (which I believe is better priced?) is that correct?

Would be very grateful for advice or suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Correct.

Bangkok Hospital and Bumrungrad are among the best and most expensive in Thailand  (BNH and Samitivej Sukhumvit are just as good and just as expensive).

Bangkok Christian Hospital (and St Louis Hospital) are good and much cheaper.

It depends on the doctor you want to see.

Make an appointment with an internist at one of these places.

Bangkok Christian is my choice. Many of the same doctors at Bumrungrad, but much, much cheaper. Many of the staff are capable of communicating in English (every doctor i've seen there is perfectly fluent).

There are many hospitals in Bangkok, far more than just the ones names, but the issue is never the hospital but rather the doctor.

With pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen and dark urine, a liver/gall bladder problem needs to be ruled out.

If you want to be seen in one of the non-profit private hospitals then I recommend one of these:

Prof. Tassanee Sriprayoon at Mission Hospital - Monday and Wednesday evenings, call to confirm. There is also a good American GP at this same hospital should she be unable to identify  a GI/Liver cause,  Dr. Nick Walters

Assoc. Prof. Pradermchai Kongkam at St. Louis Hospital (Tuesdays only, call hospital for hours)  http://www.saintlouis.or.th/index

If you don't mind paying a bit more, Asst.Prof.Dr. Siwaporn Chainuvati at BNH Hospital or Bumrungrad Hospital is very well qualified, trained at Yale Univ, is US Board certified and specializes in liver disorders

You are going to need, in addition to a physical examination, blood tests and possibly an ultrasound, so if cost is a significant concern stick to the nonprofits.
