Trump could easily solve this impasse if he just rephrased what he wants to increased funding for increased comprehensive border security. But that wouldn't serve his purpose of inciting and inflaming his base.

A big beautiful impenetrable wall with his name on it to keep out brownies is the only political message he wants out there.

He said you can call it peaches if Pelosi needs to phrase it that way.

Yeah, but it's still a "wall." Call it barrier, call it peaches, call it anything but a plan. That is what he is avoiding, a well constructed plan. He is selling ideology, and a wall serves that purpose, a plan does not.

Walls in the right places work. Usually in areas near settlements and towns. Let's shore some of those up so that drugs don't flow and more importantly the money gained isn't used to buy guns that are brought into Mexico.

It would help if Mexico wasn't so corrupt that they would actually police their side. We are dealing with a state run by cartels on one side and letting guns leave the country to arm them.

Yes, sure, walls in the right places work. We all know that. Democrats know and acknowledge that. And, of course, the Mexico side issues are well known. If Trump wanted to act Presidential, he would stop the incendiary language and this whole thing would be solved.

Border walls in critical places are a rational policy.

Seems Bush had a bill passed in 2006 to build "border fencing"  Was supposed to cost 50 billion over 25 years, only 2.3 billion was spent and ~700 miles built.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Fence_Act_of_2006

Trumps 5.7 billion is a bargain.  Though economists say it will likely cost around 25 billion to complete.  https://www.economist.com/united-states/2018/11/24/the-big-beautiful-border-wall-america-built-ten-years-ago

Well Trump is Trump Nancy needs to get over it and make a deal. Although last I heard she was spotted in the airport leaving DC today.

infantile is the attempt to defend this vile individual.

He opened his big mouth and promised a big  wall, from sea to shiny see, and Mexico will pay for it. When Mexico said they are not paying for a <deleted> wall he said "the wall just got taller" and the trumpsters changed "build the wall , build the wall"

Now he wants as to pay for it!!! and it could be a metal slat wall, anything so I can say I build the wall.

Not even if the Mexicans paid for it we would not build no <deleted> wall , it would be an embarrassment to  anything the US stands for, a waste of money, and an ecological disaster.

The year is 2019 and he has changed his tone dramatically. It is time for a deal.

They just caught and arrested 376 people today tunneling under a wall. Now the people of limited mental capacity will say "see you can make a tunnel" anybody else will say they got caught tunneling and were concentrated in one place. No wall, no tunnel, they would spread out.

Easy to catch people when you locate the hole they crawl out of. It is also easier to charge them with smuggling given the circumstance. they aren't innocent people that just happened to tunnel under the wall. Those people are called felons.

More convoluted illiberal logic.

Tunnel demonstrates ineffectiveness of wall, becomes proof of the worth of walls.

I read that too, and I looked at the pictures. They "tunneled" about 2 feet in sand.

"Tunneling" ????

Had the wall not been there they may have been able to spread out. This way the were trapped like rats in a hole.

Trump is pandering to his racist base with a wall founded on racist ideology .

His latest offer ‘I’ll leave the DACA kids alone if you fund the wall that Mexico is paying for’, is already failing with his racist base.

They want a wall and the don’t want DACA.

There is no rational basis for racism, their is no rational basis for anything founded on racism.

Trump is in a racist trap of his own making.

It’s not Pelosi holding Trump from backing down, it’s his fear of his own racist base.

And all because Mexico are paying for the wall.

Because you feel the need to indirectly call me racist (4 times in this post alone) and are seemingly very angry, can you explain to me (without getting anymore upset) why its racist to enforce our immigration laws?

Yes , let's spend all our resources building a wall , with no one to monitor it or ro react to incidents. While all our other points of entry where the majority of illegals and drugs come from remain underprotected. All to placate trump's fragile ego.

What are you talking about? This is almost exactly what Republicans are asking for, almost verbatim.

Quote

RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT FUNDING: The bipartisan and common sense legislation proposed by President Trump will reopen our government and secure the border.

  • $5.7 billion to fund a steel barrier system, including embedded investments in technology and roads, on our southern border in the priority areas cited by Border Patrol.
    • This is in addition to the more than 115 miles of barriers already built, replaced, or contracted under President Trump.
  • $805 million for technology, canines, and personnel to help stop the flow of illegal drugs, weapons and other contraband. This includes:
    • $675 million for drug detection inspection technology to help secure our ports of entry.
    • $130 million for canine units, training, personnel and portable scanners to help deter and detect smuggled narcotics, weapons, and other dangerous materials.
  • $800 million dollars in humanitarian assistance, medical support, and new temporary housing.
  • $782 million to hire an additional 2,750 border agents, law enforcement officers, and staff.
  • $563 million to support our immigration court system, including hiring 75 new immigration judge teams to reduce the immigration court backlog of 800,000 cases.

Mexicans tunnel into the US for the drug smuggling Trump complains about.

A wall would do nothing. It's a distraction from his legal problems and it's working.

Do people actually listen to that guy still?

376 people were arrested today trying to tunnel. One of the largest catches on the border lately at one time. Tunnels are not that effective these days. Maybe ten years ago.

And we have human beings referred to as rats already.

Illiberal attitudes now on proud open display.

Some of our bravest troops in VN were called tunnel rats.

The people were not trapped like rats in a hole.   Most of them are asylum seekers and their goal was to get into the US, turn themselves into Border Patrol and be screened for asylum.

I was watching a news report with a border guard standing on one side of the wall and a person on the other side climbing over.   Even without a ladder, he had no problem scaling the wall.   The border patrol officer could do nothing until he reached the other side and is in the US.

Your accusation that I hate America is without foundation, but accusing those who disagree with you of hating the nation, like referring to human beings as rats, has long been a part of extreme right-wing history.

Yet accusing people who disagree with you as being racists (several times and with emotion) is cool.
