They taxed me on my salary and added sales tax on top of that... they over tax fuel etc etc... The gvt should be accountable because they are elected by us at the end of the day. I agree that there isn't always a way depending on special circumstances but if you are determined to improve your life and rise above then you can. So many examples of that. Too many people playing the "poor me.. feel sorry for me " card. I was there and found a way to rise above. Yes, I didn't have a personal life for 4 years with working two jobs while carrying a full schedule at school but I was determined and I did succeed. It's available to those who want the same. We are in our third millennium and we still have massive social divisions. Divisions based on wealth, class, ethnicity and even religious believes. We have governments that have become businesses in which those running the show become very wealthy with very comfortable lives and excellent futures for their offspring, whilst those in need of support are ignored, marginalized and shunned. Governments, as one poster suggests, ought to have the welfare and care of their people as their primary mandate and concern. How ironic is that when their main concern seems to themselves and their families? In the UK poverty is on the rise, many rely on food banks, homelessness is on the rise, street crime is rampant, but the politicians and their cronies are doing very nicely. Even the money laundering and unusual wealth rules don't seem to affect or apply to them. Governments no longer rule for the benefit of their people, nor do they serve them. And this is regardless of the type of government they are. "We are in our third millennium and ......" You can add bad schooling to your list of ails. In the US a true "game changer" cannot get put on important committees that would afford them a true voice for change if they don't agree with the 90 year old "leaders". It's always the way of the establishment and that's probably why they are still working when the yare 90 years old. They just can't believe there are any new ideas out there. Power trip for them. oldrunner
At 78 I think death can't be all that bad, when I see how many Thais chose death over sensible driving there maybe something there. I worked hard and have a firm monetary base and a Thai wife of 18 years who helps me stay alive.

I was raised In a dirt poor family where my father worked three jobs to provide for his family. I decided to rise above and spent every hour either working, sleeping or at school studying until I graduated and started my professional career. I achieved and know if anyone else truly wants to escape poverty they can. It is indeed a mindset. With all due respect for your background and what you say you have achieved can you honestly say that for the majority of those specifically mentioned in the report are in a position to achieve the same? Could you honestly say that you could achieve the same as a Thai in Thailand. The grossly uneducated, children, the elderly, those with psych issues, gross abuse situations, disability issues are being abandoned to the streets and survive there as a last resort. A minority would have chosen to be there. Some are literally forced to be there. Consider if or not political policy biased to increase and maintain wealth by support of corporate systems which encourage automation in preference to employees incrementally exacerbates the increasing problem. Government handouts, training programs with no specific end goal in the guise of Social Support is not a path to socialism or communism. It is the minimalist antidote to avert that possibility whilst maintaining the status quo.. People who are not grossly compromised by situations they have no control of or escape from are still people. Mindset is unlikely to offset societal reality. Ulic
So, 50% positive news. In all seriousness, I hope the homeless get the help they need. A simple home in a community with social services, medical care and medication, simple meals. Help is not costly in Thailand. Along the lines of a retirement community for those in need. natway09
I was amazed in Wellington NZ just how many people sleeping on the streets in the middle of winter despite the shelters & unemployment benefits being handed out. The working folks who have just had a nice dinner in a restaurant giving them "doggy bags" & buying them a coffee. Not so sure some of them actually like the relaxed lifestyle

People who rely on the govt don't really have any goals in life. There is always a way and an option if you work hard. It's not any govt's job to provide jobs, food, medical care, etc for everyone. That would fall under the umbrella of communism. Not much point in having a government then- not if their key function as protector/provider no longer exists. Where do you get your ideas? Once these homeless people are properly trained, recruiters from the Employment Department should find jobs for them. Of course you must want to work.
