Hello,

My car and bike driver licences expired in May 2017 and I would like to renew them. I have a work permit.

My Thai wife asked what was uneeded to get this done and was said that I need to provide a proof of residence in Thailand from my embassy or from a local Thai police station.

My wife also says that the rules are very strict now and that I will need to pass a driving test.

Could someone advise if the WP does not suffice anymore or if I just need to go to another office to ask for my driver licences renewal?

Many thanks

Your licenses expired more than one year.

The rules require you to (re) do the written/theory test.

Some certificate of residence is always required.

But a WP is accepted for this purpose.

Did your wife mention that you have one?

You might politely ask to speak to a superior.

The theory test is a 50 questions multiple choice test on a computer.

More info is found in the pinned topics in this (Motor) forum.

The OP must start from the beginning...????

Not completely.

"Only" theory test, no "driving test".

But the theory test is the bigger obstacle for many.

Just wanted to share:

I renewed my 5 year bike ticket and 5 year car ticket today (Nonthaburi DLT),

pleasant experience.

Had my papers and copies in order so paper check was quickly sorted and queue number handed out.

Had to wait an hour and a half for the video show to start, I was not aware that they had fixed show times.

But from then on; smooth as silk, very organised and swift.

45 minutes of safety video, ok video,

then straight on to the physical tests (organised re queue ticket)

colour perception - wideness of vision, test of depth of distance judgement

then queue ticket for payment (500 for car and 360 for bike) 2 persons before me

then queue for photo-2 before me

all set

video(45min) + physicals + payment + photo/ticket

about 1 hour and 20 minutes

good experience

happy

My wife went again and showed them my work permit and they said that I need a confirmation document of my address from immigration police or from my embassy. She talked with a supervisor and said to him that the wp is used for this purpose but the manager refused this explanation. My wife has a master degree in public administration so I am sure she asked proper questions.

This all happens in Nonthabury.

Then she wet to the immigration office in Nonthaburi and asked for the confirmation of my address and explained why we needed it for. The immigration officer said that they did not issuee that letter anymore.

Guys, what can I do?

Can I just go to some other office out of Nonthaburi where they will accept my work permit or it is really the only solution to go to my embassy and ask for this letter?

Well mate some of the officials in driving license offices have no idea of the law/rules, they just make them up as they go along.

When i went to renew my license 6 years ago, 1 year to 5 year.

Boss at license office said farangs cannot have 5 year license.

I had a resident cert from immigration, no good enough, you need yellow book.

We left went to the Amphur got a yellow book, went back, no he would not accept it.

He then demanded my F.I.L.s blue book, what he does not live at the same address.

Wife went brought her father, blue book in hand, he still refused me a 5 year license, said i could get 1 year.

Well by this time i had enough, i called 1111 and explained what was going on, the boss refused to speak with them, told a junior employee to take the call.

After she finished the call i got a 5 year license.

Absolute BS. A five year license is standard for all foreigners, after the initial license expires. Just another xenophobic nutter. This government is filled with them. They need to go. Hopefully, next month they will be put out to pasture where they belong.

And the next government will be any different???

I am not so sure it is a lack of knowledge as much as it may be an anti farang power trip.  Some love to get the farangs worked up and jumping through hoops. However, you handled it correctly.

Any government, even one run by Justin Bieber would be better than this one. These guys could not be doing much worse.

I wouldn't go that far.
