Be honest I'm in trap 2, have more than enough money to meet the requirements just starting to think I'm not so welcome anymore so why shouldn't I look elsewhere.

If you regret it or not it's only likely to get harder for people to stay, more expensive and less welcomed. I would not regret it if the country had not changed so much in the past 20 years, for the worse.

Thank you for a wonderfully honest answer & something that us guys who are considering making the move have to keep in mind.

 

I have zero chance of getting PR in Thailand so no matter how deep I dig my roots, have to remember it's only ever temporary.

The result of the survey (of TVF readers who bothered to respond) shows 80% largely positive about the decision they made, and their state of "being" in Thailand, and 20% who are regretful.  A kind of reflection of the Pareto Principal.  One doesn't know whether this would be a reflection of expat feelings globally in the country, but I think there is a good chance that it would play out that way.

 

For those people who are considering a move to Thailand, I think the survey result is encouraging.  It should give them hope that a move to Thailand will work out well, or fairly well, for them.

 

Everywhere changes, over time.  It has to be expected, be it Thailand, or the "home" country, and oftentimes for the worse.  That said, only a measly 7% or so of people who responded actually wish that they hadn't left their previous domicile.

If all I had to look forward to was lunch, my next holiday, what I was going to wear or whether or not to have fries, my life truly would suck.

 

Sure, I make plans and decisions, but plan my future? I'd have sold myself short.

Although i cannot say that i have never indulged.  I can honestly say that bar girls have no influence whatsoever in my  decision to live here, so i guess that i am surprised to learn that i am part of a 1%.

Yes !  some farang living here have never moved further than Pattaya or Soi 4.  They have no idea what they are missing of this beautiful country and its people. I could give a list, but really don't have the time as i could go on forever.

I don't know where you live, but I just came back from Spain-Andalusia for some privat matters in CM. And I was "overwhelmed" by this pollution, inability of Thai people's driving and already rising temps. As soon I can I will go back. 

Thailand was once my destiny. However my roots are in EU. Though Dublin is too cold when you get older.

I knew nothing about the barscene when I first came to Thailand.

I first came to Thailand when backpacking when 20 years old , back when everything was different (to the UK) new and exciting and loved Thailand .

  Then came to Thailand for long holidays during the UK winter , whilst working in UK and then enjoyed the development of Thailand  , better roads, hotels and transport .

  Then moved to Thailand about ten years ago , when it was still full-on , drinking all hours and a hedonistic lifestyle and loved it .

  Now Thailand has calmed down a bit , and so have I , quite welcome the alcohol sales restrictions , so much so, that I stopped drinking completely and still like living in Thailand .

   I've been quite lucky , seeing Thailand change from the hedonistic anything goes life , to a more civil life , which kind of matched my own lifestyle requirements

Find it very difficult to chose one of the options as they all suggest that the decision to live here is final and irreversible.  Currently I have had enough of Thailand and plan to return to my home country. I would continue to visit for holidays but the pollution, cost of living and visa issues have started to make living here full time a less attractive option.

 

Maybe in a few years time, I will come back again (assuming that's even possible from a visa perspective). In the meantime I look forward to hassle free holidays in Thailand.  IMHO the trick is to never box yourself in financially in Thailand.  I have always treated any money I bring into Thailand as dead money that I will never see again. Note I don't subscribe to the 'if you don't have 800k you don't belong here' view but have seen people transfer a large proportion of their nest egg here with the result that staying does become their only option.

Left Thailand several years ago as I too had had enough of Thailand.  Settled into a normal routine of life in a modern country with all its wonderful conveniences...and became bored shitless after a few years of a mundane existence.

Hustled back to Thailand and now life is interesting and exciting once more.   

Like paying 200 baht entrance fee to get into a national park while my girl only paid 40.  Like dodging motorcycles and other vehicles coming from most any direction at any time...life is good once more.  ????
