PM joins those hitting back at Pheu Thai party in defence of the military

 

 

Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan have joined the chorus defending military spending and mandatory conscription against increasing criticism from anti-junta politicians, particularly Pheu Thai party’s prime ministerial candidate Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan.

 

The Prime Minister insisted that defence spending was not only intended for the military and for national defence, but also for non-military operations such as helping people suffering from the after effects of natural disasters, the crackdown on illicit drugs and resolving conflicts between opposing groups.

 

He then chided politicians, without naming names, for speaking without regard to reality and national interests adding “If anything happens in the future, you the politicians must be held accountable,” apparently in reference to Pheu Thai’s chief campaign strategist Khunying Sudarat.

Taiwan, which has a substantial threat, end conscription late last year.  They will have only volunteer troops.  Why can Taiwan survive while Thailand can't?  Thought the military party was way ahead anyway. 

 

Money taken from the military black hole to be used to help the economy.  The people over the military?  Chaos will ensue.  Financial independence will lead to better education and a desire for competition.  How will the military rule ?

Didn't think it was the remit of an armed forces to tackle the drug trade.

Having military firepower and logistical networking abilities like they have is actually a massive reason to keep the military well away from drug gangs (to limit the chances they join forces).

It's very clear now that greater numbers of Thais see through the myths put out by their armed forces, it is only a matter of time before the army shoot themselves in the foot again and lose even more support they can ill afford to.

 

Buckbee's comment up top is absolutely A1. Can only echo their sentiments

Having invaded every aspect of Thai social life they now pretend that the purchase of subs and tanks are for the good of the citizens. Are they really suggesting they will be bringing military equipment into the settling of disputes over dam building, coal fired power stations and water sharing? Not being able to justify them for military use this is a very sad excuse for the waste of billions of baht.

"Thought the military party was way ahead anyway."  Over here, those two words are an oxymoron.

 

How will the military rule? As they've always done, by threats and intimidation - 'a punch in the face', or 'eating a sandwich with political intent' are just two of the examples in the past five years.

 

No need for useless submarines that will never dive more than sixty feet - unless there's a catastrophic flood and the public need rescuing from Doi Inthanon.

Ending conscription could result in a landslide victory for PT. I don't know one student I teach who enjoys ROTC. They all hate it and think it's a waste of time (and many of them have parents who would traditionally vote democrat. because of the way young soldiers are treated in the army, this could cause the defence force to implode if they don't smarten up their act.

I would imagine that if a democratically elected government were to even hint that the army budget was being reduced, there would be another, immediate coup.

Once again the PM is responding to political and electoral comments; something he is not supposed to do according to law while he is in caretaker mode. He is making a habit of this and the Electoral Commission should gag the man and threaten him with jail if he continues to break the law. If they had the courage, which they haven't.

Having lived in Taiwan, they have a pretty formidable military, and unlike Thai military, which as far as I can see is solely focused on internal 'threats'.

The Taiwanese are configured to fight a defensive war from across the Straits.

 

The are also upfront that they are designed only to hold out long enough for the USN to arrive

If for "non-military operations," doesn't that justify removing such operations from the military budget?

 

There are appropriate civilian governmental agencies that currently run such operations such as Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Labor and National Police. If they are underfunded, they should submit justifiable budget requests to best serve the nation.

Maybe - but without the tremendous help from the Army and other services in 2011 it would have much much worse as the corrupt Shin sham government showed how inept they were at everything other than trying to scam money.

To be fair, Pheu Thai usually want to starve any agency or organization of funds if they can't bribe them over to their side.

 

Based on past performance, if in government, any cuts to military spending are more likely to be scammed off rather than used for the benefit of the people.
