Abhisit Vejjajiva: On the horns of a dilemma

Abhisit Vejjajiva was once a young political heartthrob, but his tough choice now has nothing to do with girls. The Democrat Party leader and former prime minister will have to choose between two men, and his decision will go a long way toward determining the immediate future of Thailand.

 

He is leading his political party into the March 24 general election as its only PM candidate. He stands a good chance himself, but talks about Abhisit have revolved more around whether he would choose to back Prayut Chan-o-cha or the other political camp virtually associated with Thaksin Shinawatra.

 

After almost three decades in politics, Abhisit has become a seasoned politician, albeit facing a bigger and bigger dilemma that is threatening his leadership of the Democrat Party.

The unconscionable irony should the leader of the 'Democrat' Party side with a military dictatorship shamelessly stacking the deck in their own favour. As for the so called 'Thaksin Allies',... an enemy of my enemy is my friend.

My take on this is he is demanding support for himself as PM (and no doubt some grade A ministries for The Democrats) if Palang Pracharat want his party's support. That way he can claim he's moving Thailand away from the narrow vision of the junta when justifiable cries of anti democracy come his way.

I mean, what other friends do Palang Pracharat have? Bhumjai Thai rejected them with Prayuth (same as Abhisit), there will be some MPs from Chart Thai Pattana and others to join post election, but really there won't be anything like the numbers to form a working government if The Democrats don't join the junta's party.

Too true, he himself is responsible for where he is now.   He could choose the military, where all those lofty academic institutions  where he is an alumni should strip him of his degrees and disown him.  Or he could choose betterment of the country.  He is rather well off, so he does not need part of the trillion the army gets every year.  Choosing the military, as he did previously, will make him even more of a pariah in and outside of Thailand.  Gee, if ever there was a choice presented to do the right thing, this is it.
