Thailand looks to India for new wave of high spending senior citizen tourists

To be very frank, the curse of Asia is the colonisation of the British, Portuguese, Dutch etc. Due to the mess they created, Asia is still squirming in the dung, and will be so for a couple of more decades, maybe centuries!

Yes but they'd have an even thicker layer of dung if the colonization never happened. Probably would still be just a bunch of tribes trying to whack each other off.

  • Thailand had loads of high spending westerners for decades until they decided to trade them in for millions of zero dollar Chinese tourist..

  • Great, so now it will be 10 octogenarian Indian men standing around a single hooker on Beach Road, rather than ones in their 30's...

  • They had better change the Thai saying "If you see an Indian and a snake, kill the Indian first".

Ask the Bar boy or girl who they prefer to go to the hotel with  Chinese ,Indian or a westerner, they say westerner really but anyway I only lay down and think of mama and money.

If Westerners would only take a minute to speak with bar girls they might find out that many (if not most) of them are in fact single mums.

The standard story being a Thai man sired a kid and did a runner, kid's being taken care of by granny upcountry while mom is taking care of biznez at tourist spots.

Middle/ upper class Indians would not want to Holiday in Thailand they will and do holiday in First world countries. Why jump from one overcrowded sess pool to another. Rip off scams are well known to Indians they won't come to Thailand and put up with second class rip offs, dirty streets.dirty beaches and above all the maniac suicidal tour bus drivers and 95% of the population that have no idea of the road rules and don't care. TAT Dream on!. Maybe they should target Bangladesh or Pakistan

From what I've understood from my Indian friends, availability of alcohol and party atmosphere isn't really great in India. Hence, no places to get properly pissed.

I have been going to India for over twenty years and the difference now is more than noticeable.  There is still a massive difference between the poor and the rich and you will get different impressions from different experiences.  I deal with middle class Indians in the cities mainly and they are always polite savvy individuals though notoriously lacking in a western sense of humour.  Miles away from rural India and the poverty and hardship you find there.

But just like China, India is booming and there are massive changes coming all the time.  I am sure that targeting older middle class Indians is a sensible move for TAT, in the long term.  However they need to be selective and the Thais tend to just go after the rupees no matter who has them.

No doubt the girls will be aware of such goings on, it is not uncommon with Thai men either when it comes to gang rape.  Plenty of bad apples out there.  Like all nationalities Indians come in all varieties, from the street pick pockets to the surgeons working on the front line for Medicin San Frontiers.

Also, like the Chinese, many young well educated Indians could teach many a westerner the way to behave.  You rarely find them in a gutter, drunk and peeing their pants.  We should all be wary of throwing stones when we live in glass houses!
The well educated do not come to Thailand. They go to Europe. And rest comes to Thailand. With all attitudes you call rare. Dream on TAT. They should now better after the chinese invasion

Someone should tell TAT to be careful what they wish for then...

There has to be some way of getting people not to actually come to LOS, but just send their money instead...

It'd make the job of cheating them much easier.

Maybe they would be coming to use Thailand’s excellent disability services on their country-wide mass transportation systems?

Yes well as I said the TAT tend to only go after the money and making up the numbers.  You reap what you sow.

That would make a fine motto to put on all government documents.

It's always satisfying to take no notice whatever of fine mottos on government documents.

Yes, many many single mums came to tourist spots from the Issan, no doubt about that. And now - with the upcoming industrialization in the EEC - many men from the Issan will follow. While more and more old Westerners will prefer the silent rural life near Issan farms, maybe together with their ex-bar girls who might now have become grannies themselves.

Sorry, you're right. I'm not Oz nor NZ, so I've got no vote.

Why should I emigrate to Europe?

Learn Mandarin, well why not, but the reality is that many Chinese speak good to perfect English today and the numbers are growing rapidly.

Something tells me the Thais have long forgotten this old saying.   Last August in Bkk I stayed at the Grand President on Soi 11 for the fourth time.  It was made very clear to us non muslim arabs, that it was us who were not welcome. Most of the staff were very rude to use, and very sweet to the muslims with burqas that filled the lobby constantly.  The usual was happening, muslim man yelling at the female Thai manager, yelling I tell you what I will do, I don't care about your rules, you understand.  She puts her down and says yes, ok, your rules.

And then she was extremely rude to myself, and I think Canadians checking in.  Some of us were talking about how rude they were to us.  After fives days of this, I checked out and went to a different hotel, as did others.  And the Thai women were with mostly the arab guys, and of course the usual 4,5,6+ with one Thai woman.  It was the same thing at the Asiatique on the Riverfront, many Thai women with arabs guys young and old.  So this saying must be a thing of the past...  ????

"The survey found that fewer Westerners are arriving in Thailand than ever before, while there was also a decline in working Westerner expats. Many expats had decided to leave Thailand, citing financial pressures due to rising costs of living."

Well done Thailand tourism, you have dug your own grave...

Maybe it's time to revise your target group and xenophobic immigration attitude.

I really don't know what would entice the Indian senior citizens to come to Thailand. If they want beaches, there is plenty of clean beach in Goa and Kerala. Jungle treks with real live tigers... And best of all, much better heath care. I would trust an Indian doctor over Thai any time. And Thailand even imports generic medicine made in India....

And, let's face it. There's just more culture in India.... do I say more? Even Thais do the pilgrimage to Bodgaya...

Sex, obviously. At least for those who still can...

Ah yes, India, formerly the British Raj.

Britain was undeniably a force for good in India, however I doubt you know much about the place prior to the British rocking up there.

It's quite fascinating:

Maybe I should give it a try, but most Chinese I know rather speak Cantonese than Mandarin - and they speak real good English.

My first reaction was that most Thais seem clueless when it comes to discerning a foreigner's socio-economic status.

Sure, if you're checking into a penthouse suite at a five star hotel, the front desk clerk will be unctuous enough, but as soon as you step outside the front doors, many Thais will pigeonhole a person based on their skin coloring, and be extremely slow to pick up on secondary clues about a person's educational and socio-economic status. An upper class Brahmin accustomed to being accorded a certain level of respect is probably not going to appreciate being talked to like they're an untouchable. Unless some major efforts to improve customer service are made, I don't see this tourism campaign becoming very successful.

I think I'd appreciate it though. Enough sakdina here as it is.

The people from India that I have met could hardly be called "high-spending".  They seem as cheap as the mainland Chinese.

With a few Lakh in the pocket, there is plenty of sex available in India.

Great for Thailand as the average Chinese tourist spent 25,000 baht.  Non Chinese 16,000

Yeah, OK, I understand what you're saying. But if I was well off Indian senior citizen, I wouldn't be going to Thailand for sex.

You mean this? That's ~65k baht spent in Thailand during the entire trip. No mention of how much of it flows back to China due to the tour groups being ferried between fleecing spots owned by Chinese.

I think I spent something like 7k€ in my first trip, not sure. At that time it must've been around 300k baht. Sounds about right, one two week millionaire is as good as five Chinese on a tour.

25k  ??  Chinese spend what on.  75% is pre paid inclusive before travel.     the money going into the tourist industry.

Most westerners  book solo, with airlines,  with first and last night in hotels and the rest free style tour.  This is where Thai people get an advantage,  westerners  rent cars, motor bikes, domestic air, bus, taxis, street food, shows, food at various places, rent boys, girls,  money going to Thai families,  westerners near always rent beach chairs,  buy from 7-11, Tesco,  drink at night bars........this money is going directly to help Thai people. TAT cannot see this.  Westerners generally tip, give to beggars,  cleaner and less noisy at hotels, and respect a queue,  and the rest....I have had 38 years here been there done that.  Lastly  most Westerners INTEGRATE with Thai people.

This must all be a big joke.

I wish TAT good luck in this project. The Indians will make sure there will be no fine dining restaurants and bars left in Thailand when the westerners moves out. More business for 7 elevens and Indian restaurants.

OMG they (TAT) are scraping the bottom of the barrel now, what next affluent North Korean's

The average is like 99% stays in Thailand as the purpose of most trips is to get money out of China.  Chinese afraid economy collapsing.
