Thai Air to levy new surcharge

BANGKOK: Thai Airways International, the country's biggest carrier, has received approval to levy a surcharge on international flights to cover rising fuel costs, following similar moves by Korean and other Asian airlines.

Thai Airways, 70 per cent owned by the government, applied to impose a $15 surcharge on long-haul flights to and from Europe , Australia and North America , the deputy director general of Thailand 's Aviation Department Chaisak Angkasuwan said.

Bangkok-based Thai Airways, which will start the new surcharge on June 1, will levy $7.5 for each passenger on Asian routes, he said.
