Chance of May getting 30 June extension appear slim after notes of EU meeting emerge

France has won the support of Spain and Belgium after signalling its readiness for a no-deal Brexit on 12 April if there are no significant new British proposals, according to a note of an EU27 meeting seen by the Guardian.

The diplomatic cable reveals that the French ambassador secured the support of Spanish and Belgian colleagues in arguing that there should only be, at most, a short article 50 extension to avoid an instant financial crisis, saying: “We could probably extend for a couple of weeks to prepare ourselves in the markets.”

The chances of Theresa May’s proposal of an extension to 30 June succeeding appeared slim as France’s position in the private diplomatic meeting was echoed by an official statement reiterating its opposition to any further Brexit delay without a clear British plan.

May wrote to the president of the European council, Donald Tusk, on Friday to ask for the delay until 30 June while she battles to win cross-party agreement on a way forward.

EU states are extremely sceptical that an extension to 30 June will resolve anything in Westminster. Tusk is pushing the EU to offer at a summit next Wednesday what he has described as a “flextension” in which the UK would be given a year-long extension with an option to come out early if the deal is ratified.

Eurosceptic European Research Group, Jacob Rees-Mogg, stating that the British government should disrupt the EU from within in the event of a long extension of EU membership.

“The functioning of the EU is a central element as how we proceed,” the official said. “The tweet of Jacob Rees-Mogg showed what they are capable of.”

Earlier in the day a European commission spokesman played down the impact of Rees-Mogg’s remarks. He said: “This gentleman is not our interlocutor and I would say then that the principle of sincere cooperation does apply as the Prime Minister May herself makes it clear in her letter.”

But an EU source said that the threat implicit in the Conservative MP’s tweet was “turning into the biggest issue”. “How can we make sure the UK doesn’t pull a Jacob Rees-Mogg? How can we make sure they play nice? On the one hand a short extension or a no-deal carries risks, but a long extension risks paralysis.”

Later, the European parliament’s chief Brexit representative, Guy Verhofstadt, wrote in response to Rees-Mogg’s tweet: “For those in the EU who may be tempted to further extend the Brexit saga, I can only say, be careful what you wish for.”

Update from Reuters:

May wrote to Brussels asking European Union leaders to postpone Britain’s exit from next Friday until June 30. But they have insisted that she must first show a viable plan to secure agreement on her divorce deal in the deadlocked parliament.

 

Kudos to EU states for standing up to Tusk/Junker/Merkel and let's hope April 12 is finally bye-bye day, both sides have other pressing matters to attend to like EU elections and a dysfunctional UK government.

That would be great news but I am not celebrating yet as TM the woman who has lied even more than Tony Blair will do everything to keep the UK in the EU IMO.

I wont be surprised if they give us an extension but not allowed in the elections. JRM is right.

I totally agree if it is true but my belief is the EU presidents do not give a flying f about the member countries and they do as they are told. But here is wishing your correct.????

afaik any decision regarding another delay must be approved by the 27 member states. and apparently it wasn't. The UK may pull a rabbit out of the hat during the weekend... I doubt it.

Well lets see but have you noticed how Donald Tusk tweets or says things instantly without consulting the other 27 member states. He and the other 4 EU presidents pull the strings IMHO.

If you look at the old Soviet system, you’ll find the updated EU from the EEC is very similar because that’s what it was modelled on. The Soviet Union didn’t collapse, it moved to Brussels taking the same system and characters with it. Top down rule by unelected commissioners, anti-democratic and corrupt, in which the former ‘workers unite’ slogans were replaced by cultural Marxist identity politics. The final irony is that the British were finally allowed to vote in or out for something they never voted to join in the first place and they’re now finding out it wasn’t a legal vote but a referendum and the political elite, led by publicly unelected remainer Theresa May are doing everything possible to thwart the majority decision. The EU will collapse in its own good time, just like all the other attempts create utopias before it, but the damage it leaves in its wake will last for generations.

With France and Germany teetering into recession..with Italy almost bankrupt and their economy still sinking..do you honestly think that mama merkel will not " crack the whip " at any country who does not want to give the UK an extension.
Merkel is all too well aware that the afD will run amok re the mep elections coming up..she is also very aware of the discontent of german taxpayers who do not want to be the atm for eu subsidy junkie countries.

Watch the documentary. It’s not a conspiracy theory, it explains what the EU is and its effects on the UK. The conspiracy theory was that we’d all ignore cultures and live in a socially engineered utopia and the 20^th century provides enough examples of that failing. How many generations in the 20th century listened to the same type of politicians promising the same pipe dreams?

In principle the EU is a great institution, but needs major reform, the reasons why 52% voted to leave are many fold and I wanted to see us remain and tackle the bureaucracy and inequalities from within.

The majority of EU Member States' economic problems are not EU induced. Global problems, such as overpopulation, climate change, marine pollution, plastic waste, species extinctions, wastage of resources, lack of drinking water, desertification, monocultures, environmental toxins, wars, etc., are affecting all economies.
The biggest competitors for the last resources are the USA, Russia and China. Anyone who believes that a small, insignificant Country can play a decisive role here, must be placed in the dreamers Corner. 
The EU has his mistakes, but without the EU, the standard of living of all Member States would drop significantly.
