Upcoming week I'm going to apply for a visa for Schengen (Netherlands) for my son. He is not my son by birth, hence the need for a visa.

12 years old, in the past he has had first single entry, later ME (as applied for) and another ME (applied for single entry but received ME).

I would prefer a ME visa but have only reason to apply for single. Should I apply for single or ME?

Thanks for ideas on this.

I suppose it depends how long the visa lasts for. As he has had a few Schengen visas before I doubt he will have difficulty getting an ME visa.

Does it make easier if the child's stepfather is an EU/EEA national?

I would apply for a MEV. The Dutch already tend to issue MEV in nearly all cases, with a validity from a few months up to 5 years (every successive visa being issued with larger validity). If you can back up the need for a MEV or extended visa duration with some arguments, all the better.
