I'm an Irish National living in Thailand. I would like to apply for a visa for my Thai wife to join me for a visit to the UK.

I have done this process twice before using the EU/EAA Family Permit route for a visit visa via VFS.

But this time I want to apply directly through the embassy and avoid VFS. I understand this is allowed under EU/EAA rules

Has anyone made such a visa application directly to the embassy?

EU rules do allow applications to be made direct to an Embassy, but why would you want to do that when the Embassy doesn't have a visa section ?   How are you going to get the application form and any documents (marriage certificate) to Delhi or Sheffield, or wherever EU/EEA Family Permits are processed now, if you don't upload them online or get VFS to scan them for you ?  And how are you going to get your wife's biometrics taken if you avoid VFS ?  You could use the "On Demand Mobile Visa Service", of course, where VFS come to your home or office, then you wouldn't even need to go to the Embassy ! I think the current cost is around 50,000 THB, but you will need to contact VFS for a quote.
