Big Joke: Due to present himself for new adviser role on Thursday

Former head of Thai immigration Lt-Gen Surachate "Big Joke" Hakparn is set to return to work on Thursday.

He has been on leave in the USA and was due to be back at work today.

A spokeswoman for the PM's office said that Surachate's team had been in touch saying that he would present himself to the Prime Minister's office on May 2nd.

Patcharaporn Inseeyong said that the Lt-Gen will be unable to be received at the PM's main office so he must present himself at the office of the permanent secretary to the PM.

This is located in the government complex at Chang Wattana where the main immigration office in Bangkok is also located.

Patcharaporn revealed that Surachate will be responsible for "public administration development" as a special adviser.

Thai Rath said that rumors about the Lt-Gen's removal from his police roles at immigration and the tech police were still subject to rampant rumor.

But no one in the media, at least, seems any the wiser.

Thaivisa notes that Surachate was the poster boy of the Royal Thai Police until his sudden downfall at the beginning of this month.

His high profile busts and public image made him the most visible and recognizable at the RTP.

His new role is in a civilian capacity and is effectively a demotion to a largely inactive post.

Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang - formerly in charge of border security - has taken over as head of the Thai Immigration Bureau.

Visitors to immigration at the government complex on Thursday can expect a big media presence for the arrival of Big Joke.

He must have finished all his international banking.

I read on a thai website it is a staggering figure.

That he has? Or that which he has had to pay back? Some rumors that he's been out rounding up cash to get off the hook. If he's really back then he must have come up with the cash?

There is an expectation there will be a big media presence. They need to be careful not to upset the PM.

Back in 2015 the PM warned he had the power to execute media reporters, particularly those who did not report the truth.

Being an honest and truthful person one can only assume he was serious when he said.....“we’ll probably just execute them”.

I take it that the hook would've been sorting an election result somehow. Then selling it to the public. Hence the need for BIG PR skills!

Once again Dear Farangs, THIS IS THAILAND AND THESE ARE THAI MATTERS. Really folks, it's none of your business and you don't deserve any further information, just like the GITMO Admiral relieved of duty, not your business. I know why I didn't make Major (0-4), but I am not divulging to the press.

They all know, but to open their mouths or print the truth would be many years in jail.

Same as a lot of Thais know the truth, but dont want trouble. the reason is simple, he voted for the opposition, simple, but a big no no if you want your cushy job and lifestyle. thats why the junta will be in power for decades to come. why do you think the result of the election isnt announced yet, because they are still looking through the votes to see who voted against them. Also its crap about his big bank accounts etc, if it was he would be in jail now and no job, in the juntas eyes hes been a naughty boy not a criminal, just a bad choice of vote.

I can suggest a few positions he might be perfect for.

Schedule coordinator for the passenger river barge.

Security consultant for Terminal 21.

Parking manager for Siam Paragon.

Head valet for the Shangri La.

So many other potentially great positions for him. Just keep him out of immigration, please. And away from police business. And anything that has any connection with business or tourism.

... any odds being given that he will return, ????????????

Yeah, I was actually curious whether or not he was physically back in the country.

Maybe I've missed it, but if he is, I'm a little shocked since my money was on him quietly slipping away somewhere
