Thai driving licence application

Featured Replies

Hi Could anyone advise if I can obtain a Thai Motorcyle licence in Koh Sumui ?

I am Australian- Have both a car and Motor bike Licence- An International driving Licence.

Will be arriving with a three month Visa, in two weeks.

Thanks for any advice.

Also give the forum search function a try - lots of info, this question gets asked every couple of weeks.

You'll need...

1) Colour Passport Copies (Visa Page, ID page)

2) Copies of your Current Aus licences

3) Affirmation of Address (from your Embassy)

4) Medical Certification

You will be able to convert your Aus Car and Motorcycle licence into 2 Year Temporary Licences (one each for Motorcycle and Car (Separate licenses)) - it shouldn't take you more than a couple of hours.

You will have to do a couple of minor tests at the licensing centre (colour blindness, proximity, reaction test) and sit a 45min video... Its all fairly simply, someone new to Thailand can handle the process on their own.

If you stay up till 3 month you can drive with your International Driver's Permission, staying longer than 3 month you'll need a Thai Driver's Licence.

Look at the pinned thread here in the Samui-forum, that might help you...

For address verification you'll need a letter from Samui Immigration (Soi 1 in Maenam), which might require to see a rental contract or like for where you stay. An address verification letter normally costs 500 baht, if price has not changed recently.

Medical letter statement you can get from various hospitals, both the government hospital in Nathon, or one of the four private hospitals. Many (of us) use Samui International Hospital opposite Tesco-Lotus shopping mall in Bo Phut (Chaweng), normally a health check for DL or "extension-of-stay" is 250 baht. Also Bandon Hospital next to BigC in Bophut offers helth check for DL, I used Bandon Hospital a number of years ago for DL, and at that time it was also 250 baht. The Land Transport Office – where you apply for DL – might, or might not, accept a health check letter from a private clinic, some private clinics may issue it for 100 baht. You need to bring you passport for ID when applying for health check.

Make sure to get two of them, one for bike one for the car.

Despite Land Transport office guidance (I guess out of Bkk) saying you can use Affirmation from Embassy or from local immigration the Samui Land Transport office refused the embassy affirmation and sent me back to get Immigration documentation.

I have the unenviable problem of having letting my licence renewal date pass by. I thought it was next year. what to do. It expired last month .

thanks for any advice, as I am desperately worried.

Up to one year after expiry you can renew without additional effort.

Last month no problem.
https://www.dlt.go.th/en/two-year-license/

(read the second section "five year")

1 IN CASE OF DRIVING LICENCE EXPIRED MORE THAN 1 YEAR
- TAKE A THEORY TEST

2 IN CASE OF DRIVING LICENCE EXPIRED MORE THAN 3 YEARS
- TAKE A THEORY TEST AND PRACTICAL TEST
