Leaving Thailand... trying to cancel True wifi service

Hey, so would be great if anyone's had any experience with this....

 

I'm leaving Thailand in July, moving back to the USA, and I went in to talk to True today about canceling my at-home wifi service. She informed me that I would have to pay 4000 baht "penalty" because I've only used 7 months of my 1-year contract. After talking to her for a little while, I strongly got the impression she was hinting to me to just stop paying, since I wasn't planning to move back to Thailand for a while (if ever). She said there was some chance I'd have to pay extra if I came back and tried to open a new True account (since it's connected to my passport), but otherwise, there would be no penalties.

 

So, I guess I'm wondering...

 

1) is this true? I don't have a credit card attached to the account, so if it's only my passport, should I just bail on the account and take the lumps if I end up moving back to Thailand? (or just go with another service provider)

 

2) how long before service is interrupted for lack of payment? Does anyone know? I'd prefer not to leave my account "live" when I'm not here. How long would it take for them to simply stop service?

 

Any help / advice on this would be great, thanks!

You can suspend it for max 3 months with a small fee then cancel it when your contract is up.

I got a 46,000 baht mobile phone bill from True one month ( i opened roaming in a very remote country for only 2 days! ). Anyway i'd had a 10,000 baht limit on my account, i offered to pay the 10,000 but no more which was not accepted so  i paid nothing.

 

The girls in the shop basically told me there would be no reprecussions i'd only get blacklisted from True for getting a new SIM - big deal. We all had a pretty good laugh about it coz of the amount...

 

I'd just walk away and pay nothing.

Take the hint...stop paying...they will get the hint to stop service...

 

It may not be true of all True offices...but the one I deal with lies about fees and penalties...can not he trusted...

I rented a condo a few years back and the previous renter did that , walked away without  canceling true WiFi. I couldn't service unless true got was was owed to them. The condo owner was stuck with bill and once paid I get service.  So you walk away you just stick it to someone else.

True are the worst provider in Thailand  IMHO and attempt to con most. Do what many do and don't cancel just forget about it and leave. Eventually it gets wiped off their records.

True sent us a lawyer letter for outstanding payment of 300B phone bill dated 3 years back few months back. Knowing that we had settled all outstanding bill because we switched to AIS using the same number, we ignored it. They will chase you even for 1B but if you are leaving for good, just ignore it.

I had the same problem with True when I switched to AIS back in 2017, True Visions sucks.  Ever since AIS picked up all the HBO channels and so many other great United States television channels and True dumped them I immediately switched to AIS and True was trying to milk me for every penny they could.  I ended up paying something like 7,000 baht if I remember right.  I was mad because I was switching to AIS and leaving True because the service that True promised which I was paying for was going away, and I didn’t think I should have had to pay any penalty because it was their fault that I had to switch to AIS.  

 

I hate to say but you’re probably going to end up paying it.  I argued with True over it for months and I still ended up paying but I did get them to knock down some of the cost.  My AIS service is great I switched our iPhones, internet, and cable services all to AIS after True lost most of their good channels.  And AIS even has more channels from the United States and other countries including Fox News and CNN.

You should not have paid if you were changing to AIS.

I don't get it!! I canceled True after 9 years of their horrible service. Turns out, I had a deposit with them [B3000] that was required 11 years ago.

True cancelled my service and transfered my B3000 + 8 years of interest.

I just can't understand why peeps have a problem cancelling with True.

When we signed up to Truevision/internet it was required to pay the 12 months upfront if in my name. Have they changed that policy or have you already paid in advance when you signed up.

You used them for a long time. The OP says he has only had them for 7 months and that he originally signed up for 12. Usually this is when you get free installation which is one reason why they want a minimum period.

Strictly speaking he is breaking the contract and presume 5 months rental = 4k? 

 

Personally I have True but would ditch them in a heartbeat if I could guarantee same/better internet at the same cost.

I never paid 12 months up front when I switched to them some years ago.

Actually I kind of had to because when we first signed up for the True service when we first got to Thailand my wife was missing her Thai ID Card at the time because of a really bad car accident in the States before we retired over here and we didn’t get my wife her new Thai ID Card till a while later after we moved here to Thailand from the United States.

So we signed up for the original True service using my Niece’s Thai ID card under her name. So I was even more obligated to pay it because I didn’t want it to show up as a black mark on her credit since she did us the favor before my wife got her new Thai ID Card. That was back when we first moved here. By the time we switched to AIS my wife has her Thai ID Card so our AIS service is under my wife’s name now.

About six months before we retired and moved here to Thailand my wife was in a serious car accident and she lost her whole purse with her Thai ID Card in it and everything else. We replaced her US Driver’s License, and her United States Permanent Resident Card before we left the States but we knew we were moving to Thailand anyway so we just waited till we got here to get her new Thai ID Card after we got here.

Even if it had been under my name or my wife’s name I’d still pay it because it’s the right thing if you don’t pay your bills here in Thailand you will get what’s called “Blacklisted” from buying anything on credit it’s kind of like having bad credit in the United States. A lot of Thai people are Blacklisted from buying anything on credit because of that very reason.

In fact my wife’s sister in law has a lot of debt and she’s Blacklisted. It was really stressing out my wife’s brother her husband to. She actually asked me for money 3 months in a row and I eventually said no and she started relentlessly asking me on Facebook Messenger. So I spoke to the rest of the family about it and they had no idea that she had been asking me for money and they apologized to me and said that they would speak with her. They also told me about her debts and that her credit had been Blacklisted. They said that her husband makes 40,000 baht a month and she spends it all in like a few days. So her husband my wife’s brother is now working A HELL OF A LOT OF OVERTIME trying to pay off her debts and the man is under a lot of stress and isn’t getting hardly any sleep at all because he’s working overtime all the time. Having bad credit in Thailand can cause serious problems even potential legal problems.

Additionally us foreigners need to make sure that we pay our bills because if we don’t and if a lot of us default on money owed then it’ll eventually make the Thais less willing to extend us foreigners credit because of the risk of default.

Although I know from experience that True is scamming people probably because they are losing a lot of business to AIS. True is a rip off. My AIS service is awesome.

Oh yeah well I actually saw it happen to my neighbor from the UK. They took him away in handcuffs, made him pay what he owed, and they dropped him off back home later on that afternoon he was gone for hours with the police because he owed money on something very simple. I thought it was an immigration thing at first but nope he defaulted on a bill for several months. So yes actually it does happen you do not want to owe anyone money in this country because Thais don’t play when it comes to money.

She is right,  I've seen it first-hand stack of mail for my prior tenants who has True, they don't even bother to close the account and just walk away, they don't have the resources to do anything about it.

Yeah well it was quite embarrassing for my next door neighbor from the UK when that exact thing happened to him for the exact same reason. He was taken away in handcuffs and was taken down to where he owed the money and was forced to pay it and was escorted by the police in front of everyone. The cops dropped him back off at home several hours later. I thought it was an immigration issue at first but nope he defaulted on a bill. I doubt you’ll be laughing when that happens or when you are refused entry if you do get away with it and leave Thailand and then try to return one day.

i moved into my house five years ago.

 

the true internet was still hooked up as the Russian man who lived here just left it in his name and took off.

 

he was nice enough to write the wifi PW on the router. 

 

then the bill came in the mail and I got the account number and I just pay it every month at the mall kiosk. 

 

and then one year the router blew up and they replaced it, no charge. still thinking I am "Russian Man".

I remember with true there was something about needing to return the router and tv box. 

I took it into the true shop took a number. Waited an eternity. So left it all on the table and walked off. 

Got a call a few weeks later saying I need to return the router and box.

I told him I did.

Never heard from them again.

Compared to AIS fibre they were not that good.

So much fluff of crap boring tv channels when all I wanted was wifi.

I may have been over a year and outta contract.

Well the reason why I found out why he was taken away in handcuffs was because I was at the mall later and I saw him being paraded through the mall escorted by the same two cops who I saw take him from his house in the first place in cuffs to settle up on a bill he had outstanding. I don’t think it was true it was one of the other companies in the same category. I’ve also read reports of people being denied entry because of outstanding debts and people finding out that they had arrest warrants because of outstanding debts.

Since the non event i've left the country and re-entered many times, trust me nothing will happen.

 

I also have a lot of unpaid speeding fines that i'm not in the least concerned about.

So many people just say walk away, and then they wonder why its hard for foreigners to get stuff like credit cards  post paid phone and now the mandatory insurance. Its because people don't pay their bills then those who do have to suffer because of those actions.
