The body of a Myanmar national was retrieved from an underwater cave in Kanchanburi’s Thong Pha Phum district on Sunday night.

Sathit Pinkool, chief of Lam Klong Ngu National Park, said the body of Medone, 40, was retrieved from a cave under the waterfall at about 11pm on Sunday.

Medone and three friends went to the waterfall to harpoon fish on Saturday night but he was swept into the cave by a strong tide and got stuck. His friends quickly alerted park officials.

Park officials, the Kanchanaburi Rescue Foundation and relatives searched for his body throughout Sunday but were unable to locate him. Sathit said a team of scuba divers from a marine rescue operation club arrived at 10pm Sunday and spent an hour locating then retrieving the body.

Chalermphan Hongyont, chairman of the 7th Region’s Marine Rescue Club, said the scuba divers found the body about five meters into the cave, which is eight to 10 metres underwater. The operation was difficult as the cave was dark, the water cold and the tide strong, he added.
