I have by prior arrangement with busy motor vehicle service, & repair, garage allowed them to have my vehicle with them, over 7 days, for replacement of gasket of engine [ crankcase-block I understood ] so as to stop coolant leak [ barely visible from underneath raised vehicle onto driving surface ].

I had some months prior to submitting vehicle with them, paid to them, as deposit & demonstration of my true-intention to return to them to complete the work, the cost of the gasket that would later be deducted from total bill.

The agreement is Gross Bill for gasket job would be ;

some THB 3,000 - THB 4,000

And,- with deduction of the amount pre-paid for Gasket reducing that amount.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Some 2 days after leaving the vehicle with them,- they returned by phone call to my wife with the news that other work is necessary ;

PRICE ; THB 52,492

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

They followed with a Scan of their Estimate Sheet ;

Handwritten, & in Thai Language [ & Script ].

ATTACHMENTS :

1_

Estimate Sheet ;

2_

Dual-effort by my wife & me to translate Estimate Sheet into English ;

Please Note ;

I expect that there are crucial mistakes in the translation & guess-work involved.

p.s.

Just after sending this post,- I notice that this attachment actually features as Link at very end.

3_ & 4_

Some photos of actuals / examples of components listed above which the garage also sent by Line.52492

There is language barrier as regards I communicating directly with the garage by phone call.

And,- they know that I am about 200 km away from them.

I have not yet visited them.

I welcome constructive thoughts from my fellow Thaivisa.com posters on this whole matter.

Suggest you paste the contents of the attachment as plain text.

Apologies to u that I am not very good at computer skills.

Meanwhile,- I trust that the translation does open up when u click that Link at end of my opening post ?

Sounds to me there was something wrong in the translation to begin with. No way would a Mazda dealer replace a head gasket for 3-4,000 baht.

Replacement of all the rings/rubbers may not be necessary, but I do understand that while working on this they just replace all. The main question I have would be the necessity to replace the engine mounts.

Gasket Replacement agreed upon was not for Head of Engine ;

It was for another part of the Engine ;

I thought :

initially ..... Crankcase-Engine Block Interface

but, following the latest developments,- perhaps ..... Timing-Chain Casing-Engine Interface

Since leaving the vehicle with them,- I have been wondering how Coolant can leak through a Gasket located at underneath portion of Engine ;

Surely,- Engine Lube is the only fluid expected as the most likely fluid that can leak there ?

Anyway,- how much do u expect a non-dealership general garage doing service, & repair, charges individually for Labor on Gasket Replacements of the various interfaces of a V6 Engine such as this ?

My reflection on the only Photos supplied, & the Estimate Bill ;

The new Proposal is for work to be done on :

A_

Timing Chain System

I do wonder why an engine with "alleged" 160,000 km can have trouble with what is originally claimed to be a "Maintenance-Free Valve-Timing System"

B_

Engine Mounts

There is invariably a Jolt occur, noticeable to the occupants, upon changing the Automatic Transmission Selection Lever from PARK to DRIVE ;

Perhaps the Garage pursued this phenomenon, & proffer the Engine Mounts as due replacing because :

THEY CONTRIBUTE TO THE JOLT ?

& / OR

THEY ARE AFFECTED BY THE JOLT ?

Maintenance free valve train system is exactly that but the timing belt or chain may have a life span....Handbook will tell you..

If an engine/trans mount is stuffed you will get a jolt engaging drive.

Usual failure of any of the mounts is oil contamination, an oil leak, oil attacks rubber mounts..

Seller to me led me-in-person, & my wife [ on phone-calls & Line, only ] to believe that the various names on the Blue Book of Car were simply all part of the arrangement for original owner to purchase this vehicle new through a Finance Company.

But,- I have afterwards discovered that some subsequent names are unrelated to that arrangement.

So,- I am concerned about how a hole-in-the-wall garage Used 4-Wheel Motor Vehicle Dealer got this vehicle to advertise on internet for sale, & which I subsequently bought from him-in-person.

was this vehicle detected as having problems that would be not-cost-effective to solve, & sold dishonorably ?

the genuine mileage ?

the maintenance of this vehicle ? ; NO Maintenance Book

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.

WHY, I WONDER, IS THE VALVE-TIMING CHAIN SYSTEM HIGHLIGHTED FOR REPLACEMENT -- BAR THE CHAIN -- BY THIS DIFFERENT GARAGE ?

WHERE, & WHY, IS THE COOLANT LIKELY TO BE ACTUALLY LEAKING FROM ?

The Jolt is bad for the various parts of the Drive -- especially the Automatic Transmission -- if the Jolt fault is not solved ?

This is not a very sharply drawn diagram ;

And, regrettably for the non-Spanish language speakers,- it is in, u guessed it, .... Spanish ;

Nonetheless,- it post it now as a useful diagram Re ; my Valve-Timing Chain Issue

And,- here is Mazda Tribute Year 2005 Service Manual ;

I hope to print it out ;

Printed would be more easy for me to absorb.
