Call for extra B2bn for Phuket light rail project blurs budget figures

PHUKET: Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) Governor Pakapong Sirikantaramas yesterday (May 30) revealed that the Phuket light-rail project needed an extra B2 billion to be brought to completion.

DPM Somkid calls on NESDC to quickly make country’s competitiveness rank up

BANGKOK, 31 May 2019 (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak has expressed confidence that Thailand’s ranking in world competitiveness which has moved up five notches to 25th will continue to rise. He has assigned the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council to take positive measures for the raising of values in industrial and agricultural sectors. Thailand’s competitiveness is expected to rank no lower than 20th next year.

Rumors of premier to declare state of emergency, dissolve parties dismissed

BANGKOK, 31 May 2019 (NNT) - Deputy government spokesman Lt. Gen. Veerachon Sukhonthapatiphak dismissed as groundless the rumors shared online that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has planned to use his absolute power to declare a state of emergency and dissolve political parties, rendering the loss of status for all 500 MPs. He said the premier has followed the laws, listened to the people and has not had such ideas to do as rumored.

King Power wins duty-free auction for Bangkok's main airport

Thailand's King Power won the auction to run the duty-free shops at Bangkok's biggest airport, authorities said Friday, priming the company to extend its monopoly over a concession worth nearly $2 billion a year.
