Chatuchak is Chatuchak because it's a unique market ... open air, shops of all different creations etc ....... It just needs more fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems and more fire awareness with the shop owners and the public. 13

Unfortunately the implementation and the possibility to educate, do not exist. yes .... they do have a strict no smoking policy .... I think it's an on the spot 2,000 baht fine, and I have never seen anyone smoking in the market so it is working. And who knows, this could have been caused be an electrical fault .... But they just need to visit each shop a couple of times a year with pamphlets and reassert the fire safety requirements. Not so hard to do. 1
Popular Post Lynmark Posted June 3, 2019 Popular Post Posted June 3, 2019 This is sad because many shops are the sole livelihood for the traders, they may have no income for months as well as loss of all their goods. Some reports up to 120 shops affected. It is very hard to get fire insurance because it is deemed too risky by companies (we can see why). There is a fire about every year somewhere in the complex. The fire may be electrical, more likely than smoking, and stalls in that area in that stock many flammable substances, the metal doors did little. Needs working fire sprinklers and monitored CCTV. It could also be suspicious, there is a long running dispute involving the SRT, BMA and traders that has been in and out of court. 3

Pretty common to see the shop owners bust out the cigarettes and smoke around closing time.
wpcoe Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Can you imagine the outcome had that fire erupted on a busy weekend day? Thousands of customers trying to flee a maze.
