Although Isaan is a clearly defined area now, its history is intertwined with the areas that abut it.

It appears that 'Thailand: A Short History', David K. Wyatt, Chiang Mai:Silkworm Books ISBN 974-9575-44-x is the generally-accepted most-convenient exposition.

To get the flavour of recent history, I recommend two historical novels:

Boontawee 1976. Boontawee, Kampoon 'A Child of the Northeast'. Bangkok: Editions Duangkamol and

Khonkhai 1978. Khonkhai, Khammaan, 'Khru Ban Nork/ The Teachers of Mad Dog Swamp'. Chiang Mai: Silkworm.

On the history of the villages, a book that I found very enlightening was:

Nartsupha 1999. Nartsupha, Chatthip. 'The Thai village Economy In The Past'. Chiang Mai: Silkworm.

(Translation of Thai publication of 1984).
