Popular Post mojaco
Today I helped an 83 year old relative do an extension for retirement in Chiang Rai using 800,000 Baht in the bank for 2 months prior. When the doors opened at 8:30 AM there were 4 waiting. By the time we left about 10:30 there were about 20 total that had come in and out, and 5 of those were for 90-day reports which only takes about 5-10 minutes each person with a specially designated officer to speed their reporting. There were 5 officers at the counters and at about 10:00 the senior IO came in. He has to sign off on retirement extensions and waiting for him to arrive was the reason we were not finished an hour earlier. The documents supplied with every copy (only one copy needed) signed were: (1) Copy of face page and every used page in passport (2) Copy of TM6 (front and back), TM30, and latest 90-day reports (all these stapled in passport) The TM30 was a screen print from the latest online report made by the house owner The 90-day report was a printout from the online reporting system (3) TM7 form with photo put on, and telephone number on back page (4) Letter from house owner letting the applicant stay free in their house along with signed copy of the owner's Tabien Bahn and Identy Card. (5) Bank Book updated 2 days prior and copy of each used page (6) Bank letter certifying the applicant was the owner of the bank account and certifying the amount in the bank on that update day. The update was a Bangkok Bank "b/f" entry (balance forward) which the update machine creates without needing to deposit or withdraw funds. Chiang Rai allows updates up to 6 days old to be used. There were 4 other forms given to be signed having to do with the new rules, forbidding work on retirement, overstay, and another one which details i fail to remember. There were no "special" requests for such things as a map, photos, house owner to be present and the like. The officers were helpful, business-like and pleasant enough, even though there was one applicant in a 15-20 minute disagreement partly because his English skills weren't up to really understanding what the IO was telling him (plus he also seemed to not be too willing to try to understand). So, a short extension without any surprises. They did not ask for the applicant to return in 90 days with an updated bank book proving the 800,000 was still there. 2
DrJack54
Thank you for comprehensive report. Haven't seen many reports re Chiang Rai. Reminds me to visit again for nice vista on little pattaya. So no need to show bank account activity on day of application?

Thailand
Good report. The 800K seems to be the way all the offices want it, easy for the io's and probably the only way dodgy agents can get the extensions of stay. Hardly seeing any reports of 65K + monthly "income" without letters from embassy and particularly with "leniency" or combination of monthly income plus lump sum.

I did my first retirement extension with my Embassy letter in April. The office was busy with hordes of Chinese and Koreans. I got the extension, but the I/O made me jump through hoops i.e. making me fill out another TM7 local form which was no different than the one I had already filled, except for the font sizes. My last visit a week ago for my 90 day, the office was empty and that same I/O was very pleasant with me and we had a nice chat while another I/O was doing the report.

Yes, there are those who have problems and hold up the line for everyone else but often they are problems of their own making. Sitting there watching what the immigration staff have to deal with on occasion, I am impressed with how well they treat the rest of us. I certainly couldn't sit there and deal with that kind of blame and abuse day in and day out. Overall I am quite happy with Chiang Rai Immigration and the crowds have thinned out considerably.

I'm planning on using the monthly income method as well. Are you saying that a letter from one's embassy is required to accompany the bank printouts showing the monthly deposits ? He was just saying he had not seen many reports from those using proof of the income going into a Thai bank. The said he had seen more reports about people using proof of income from their embassy.
Lacessit
The crunch will come after July 1. That is when we will find out whether health insurance requirements apply to retirement extensions, or not. Everyone hold their breath.

Agreed that it is the simplest and easiest thing to do, provided one is able or wants to put 800k on deposit. I definitely do not want to. $25,000 USD is money I would prefer to keep invested in the USA. I have plenty of income, but the income method at the moment anyway, is shaping up to be a real pain in the keester

They got 2 weeks left and have yet to post it on the London Thai Embassy website wrt Non-Imm OAs. Edited June 13, 2019 by jacko45k

Thanks - I've passed the Mae Sai office dozens of times so I know that one. Never seen one on the airport bypass road, I'll keep an eye out for it next time.
